Controller spiltter possible?

Would it be possible to create a simple splitter that allowed continued access to the stock FB9 controller's on-stick buttons while using a "real" joystick or a Retron pad or something similar?

You could buy two joystick extension leads then splice them together.

I bought this adapter to try out:

It works great, indicating all 9 pins are wired from end-to-end. I have both a joystick and a pair of paddles connected to the left port leaving the right port free for another pair of paddles.
