Mike Singleton is one of my all-time dev heroes. JW calling Midwinter "my game", and getting away with it in an allegedly serious mag, makes me all kinds of mad. Thanks, but no thanks, "Nick Thorpe".

I sadly missed a lot of Mike's work, as I wasn't a ZX Spectrum owner and as a C64 owner, Quake Minus One wasn't the best introductory process to Mike, but as an ST owner..

Midwinter 1+2

Star Trek

War In Middle Earth.

Only dissapointment was Whirlygig.

I used to simply enjoy reading Mike being interviewed in the likes of ACE, EDGE, Gamestm magazines etc.

The Midwinter Origins story had been laid out there and then and expanded on by others from Maelstrom over the years, this Chinese Restaurant ancedote Jane pulled was absolutell bovine droppings.

Mike was always very humble in interviews, for Jane to swan in and say Mike invented solid 3D..Mike invented Texture-Mapping, Mike wanted to do better 3D than what Realtime software were doing... Just outrageous lies.

Mike pioneered work with solid 3D,lightsourcing,Fractals etc on the ST, AMIGA and PC, but he didn't invent it and would never claim he had.

To blow out of all proportion a miniscule role he had on Ashes Of The Empire to try and link himself to Mike and the Midwinter series, to fabricate a story where Mike, Sid Mier, Wild Bill Stealey etc are all sat in a Chinese Restaurant and chaos breaks out..

Dear god Jane.

Mike canned Survivor on the ST to do Midwinter, Midwinter origins began as a game called Blitz on the ZX Spectrum, If Mike mentored you, you'd know that, you'd know Mike's work on Starlord..

To see Nick Thorpe gushing with admiration for Jane, wishing he'd been given more pages for Jane to lie on, makes me so glad I stopped funding the rag that is RG Magazine, years ago.

Im gonna put a prediction here now:

If I ever become world-renowned in the industry for any reason, Jane will have taught me everything I know. They mentored me and probably lead whatever project got me the recognition. Most likely we had drinks every Friday where Jane would come up with the ideas I'd work on. Also my dad is a fighter pilot or something.

Edit: Also the game uses Athena Technology because why not.

You just want to tell him to put a sock in it about his fetish but that wouldn't work....

Jane wrote the computer text screens for Jaguar AVP.

ANDREW WHITTAKER
WANTED FOR IMPERSONATING A POLICE OFFICER

This would be an in-Joke by him I assume, making reference to him being a Special Constable in his local constabulary at one point?

An utter void between doing public service role for your local area and being the victim of an improvised explosive device whilst carrying out a counter terrorism role ?

But this is exactly what Jane constantly does.

There's something drastically wrong with him where he simply cannot give honest, accurate accounts, they have to be given the 'Hollywood'  treatment.

See thats half the problem with Jane. Some of what they say might actually be true. Maybe Jane was a police officer for a while, but we'd have no idea because there is so much lying going on at the same time.

If Jane said they helped invent Midwinter, and that was the only story without any real evidence, I'd give them the benefit of the doubt. But so far literally everything seems to be grossly exaggerated at best.

Apparantly Jane Whittaker dictated the 10 commandments to Moses....

he was simmultaneously in London, California and Florida at that time but had to rush to Mount Sinai after getting a call from god asking if he could get it sorted.

he will also probably claim involvement with inventing the covid vacine, the internet, nuclear fusion and creating the harry potter franchise - but only future interviews will confirm this.

As a side note - it's really nice to see the Yakmeister posting here - one of my all time heroes.

We should all eagerly await his next podcast interview, where he can give his personal involvement on the very design of the Stone Tablets themselves, some amusing stories about Moses and loan of a spanking brand new chariot..

Jane will interrupt the interview to say, slight tangent, but did he mention Moses giving him the small sum of 40,000  Shekels, getting him to do a grand tour of the Pyramids, which gave him the idea to feature them in his AVP Film..?

There will be a touching personal insight into Pharaoh King Ramses II and how Jane was used as a consultant on the film Exodus:God's And Kings.

Ridley Scott begged him to make it, he'd known him and Sigourney Weaver of course as part of the Alien film family which he is a key member of..

Apparently he's still got the original parchments proving all this at home somewhere and an unspecified scribe from the time, now sadly passed of course, witnessed the whole thing, he will post photographs of said parchments as proof to his Twitter followers in the coming weeks.

Right after the Power Crystal footage finished boxes, smoking Predator footage and first screens of his AVP spirtual sucsessor, now being built with the Athena engine and will feature a flight sim style USCM Dropship stage, that he wanted to include on the Jaguar original, but he ran out of cartridge space.

The game itself is being coded on the International Space Station ad he knows Elon Musk and wants to remain hidden until the game is complete.

You'll play as a mixed gender colonial marine as one of the characters.

The Xenomorphs you encounter, will only face forwards, as Fox won't allow side on views, even though they did for the SNES, GB and Arcade games.

Gandalf is currently playtesting early code, using a TV system thst has yet to be invented.

Edge, Eurogamer, Retrogamer are scrabbling to get the exclusive, Wireframe pulled planned article.

If Jane said they helped invent Midwinter, and that was the only story without any real evidence, I'd give them the benefit of the doubt. But so far literally everything seems to be grossly exaggerated at best.

As an ex-Special Constable myself, it should be straightforward enough to confirm Jane served, if anyone is wishing to pursue it for the court proceedings.

Impersonating a police officer (Jane has in the past, issued photos of himself in uniform, but why he had the high vis jacket on, is odd, can't remember if he transfered the collar lapels to it, as they would of had his collar number on them), is a serious offence.

If it's known which constabularly and when Jane served, Jane would of been sworn in at a local magistrates court before being granted his warrant card, he'd also of had a collar number, had to attend specialist courses (handling of prisoners, use of C. S Gas, Speed Cuffs, extending batons etc) depending on when he supposedly served.

If he attended things like Parish Council meetings as a  police representative, to free up regulars, it would be recorded in the minutes.

But is it really an avenue worth pursuing, given the scope of everything else Jane has done?

I'd personally ignore it...

Jane pushed the Midwinter story far too far, foolish given UK Press at the time had documented it and detailed the tech demo Mike presented to Rainbird, the staff Rainbird assigned to help Mike flesh it out into a full game.

Given at the time Telecomsoft had access to the exclusive restaurant at the top of the Telecom Tower, to pitch a story where they've flown in Sid Mier and Wild Bill Stealey and rather than take them there, just go to the local Chinese and then a food fight breaks out...

The BT Tower in London with grey clouds behind The Top of the Tower restaurant revolved completely every 23 minutes(Image: CC/ Anthony O'Neil)

The revolving restaurant in the BT Tower was the city’s coolest place to eat for 25 years.

The novelty of eating dinner as the panoramic views of London changed around you attracted stars from The Beatles to Muhammad Ali when it first opened in 1966.

Situated on the 34th floor of the iconic 189m tall structure, the Top of the Tower restaurant would turn round completely every 23 minutes, giving diners incredible 360 degree views of the city.

But no, Microprose top brass were taken to the local Chinese ????

That's just beyond absurd,it's farcical.

Jane highlights how little he knew about both Firebird and Rainbird.

Firebird was started in 1984.. sold to MicroProse in 1989,Graftgold did Flying Shark in 1987.

Jane name drops David Braben and Elite, saying he knew David from the Firebird /Rainbird days, funny, Firebird published the non-Acorn versions of Elite but in  1985+1986..

Jane wasn't at Graftgold at that time.

Jane told Andrew Rosa the 3 labels were... FIREBIRD, RAINBIRD AND MICROPROSE.

No, they were Firebird, SILVERBIRD (the budget label) and Rainbird.

Honestly given how little Jane understood about current game development practices and pipelines during my employment, it astounds me that they were even part of the AvP team. Jane must have had some understanding and skill there, right? Now they cant even muster up some basic javascript and thinks (not kidding here) a team of 2 artists can make an entire explorable city level with 'Crysis graphics' in just a couple weeks. It felt like I knew more and had more valuable experience than Jane, and that experience was almost entirely in small-time mobile games. Whatever skills Jane had in the 90s just bloody disappeared.

heh, I've occasionally passed by here before but usually just to see if the AtariAge Pervert is still going or to check out any cool homebrews. I did buy a Harmony cart earlier this year which is rather cool.

I'd've never have imagined the weird rabbit hole I fell down that brought me to posting in this thread, though; it's such a weird story you couldn't make it up!

(Unless you were Jane Whittaker of course).

After graduating from prevert and vert status, I prefer the term "postvert." I've grown.

Hey everyone, I'm the person who spoke to Sam, Sam confirmed he never went to Hull to collect a 16 year old Jane nor did they adopt Jane, and Jane never lived with them.

I'm also the same person who spoke to Stealey and other's, I seem to be doing the job the "journalists" didn't do.

Sigh, I might as well add my own two cents here since I also had some dealings with "Jane" 25 years ago.  He was on the #atari IRC channel and of course I was young & naive when he was recruiting people to work at his Perceptions studio.  And of course he promised me a programming job in England which was a dream of mine, but after two or three years of not hearing back, and working a crappy low wage job, I just gave up and went back to school to finish my CS degree.  By that time I found out that Perceptions was long closed up and "Jane" was in a game mag saying he's working for MGM.  Glad I never took the offer or I would have been stranded in the UK with no money!

Anyway here's what I can knew you about "Jane" at the time...

  • He never used his real name Jane but called himself Andrew, nor mentioned anything about being a hermaphrodite or a conjoined twin.
  • He said he wore socks because he spilled scolding hot water on his feet so he can't wear shoes, also wears nylon leggings instead of pants.
  • This is the weirdest part, and a major red flag...he expected all his employees to wear socks & leggings as a form of "solidarity".  I made a joke about wearing a Scottish kilt to go along with the leggings and he seriously told me what plaid skirts to wear.  For a Job Interview!!!!!

After finding out the whole truth about Jane Whittaker, I literally thank God that I never got a job in the game industry through that con artist.  Plus it burns me that to this day he still tricks people who want to get started in the business like some sick pimp preying on innocent young children...

BTW, anyone know exactly when Perceptions went out of business?  I'm just curious for closure reasons.

I don't know exactly when, but I think Jane changed his name from Andrew sometime in the early 2000s.

Id heard others mention the scalding water story, the rest of this doesn't surprise me at all though. I seriously think the socks thing is some weird form of voyeurism for Jane. Creepy and gross.

I've been wracking my brains to try to recall if I ever did meet him in Sunnyvale. Certainly not while I was there doing demos on the prototype Jag, and certainly not when I was in final test for T2K. I *do* remember going out to lunch one time with a British guy who I *think* might have been involved with AvP, but honestly the most memorable thing from that encounter that I definitely recall was that it was the first time I'd ever been to a place selling "submarine sandwiches" and I think they thought me a bit weird for having mine with just turkey meat and no embellishments at all. That would have been during the time I was out there working on VLM for the Jag CD, so June 1994 IIRC.

When I was in Sunnyvale I didn't really tend to have lunch anyway, as usually I'd be staying at the Sundowner motel just off Mathilda avenue, about a 20 minute walk from Atari on Borregas Avenue. I used to enjoy the walk to and from the motel and the office, getting my head ready for the day's work or relaxing afterwards and having a cig on the way back, listening to my CD walkman. I'd usually have breakfast in the motel dining area in the morning and then dinner in the evening at Cattlemans, the bar/grill attached to the Sundowner. Then as often as not a skinful at the bar and a couple of tokes in the car park if Mark the piano player happened to be holding that night. Good times. I have fond memories of those days, but if Whittaker was present at all I'm afraid he left no impression.

I do remember Kal's though, it was a decent burger place further up Mathilda past the Sunnyvale mall, and yes, it is indeed still going to this day, Jane's not wrong about that. Can't remember if I ever did go there with Atari (going out for lunch with the guys wasn't much a thing for me, usually a cig outside the back door of Borregas was midday sustenance enough for me). But when in the autumn of 1994 I moved out to California to become an Atari employee, for the first couple of months before I found my own place to rent, I stayed in the apartment complex directly opposite Kal's, and used to go in there for more often than was probably healthy; it surely was a good burger place, and I am pleased to see it is still going!

Sad that Cattlemans is gone though, although the building remains, as does the Sundowner. It is a Greek restaurant now, if you look on Street View. If I were richer and we weren't in the midst of a pandemic, though, I'd go and stay at the Sundowner for old times' sake, just for a few days. I'd be missing the bar and Mark and a crafty one skinner in the car park of an evening though.

I bought my 3DO at Sunnyvale mall. Given the whole 3D0DEAD thing I felt a little disloyal doing so :D

Thank you for coming forward.

The more voices that gather and put forward personal experiences of Jane into the public domain, the weaker his attempts to deflect and play the victim card become.

Thanks to your post, we now have additional background information to go with the claim he made about suffering major burns during the development of AVP (he's often liked to put his health reasons behind the delays, burns, a tumor, on-going surgery from his childhood etc).

This totally flew in the face of the reasons given by likes of Purple Hampton,  Bob Brodie, Dan McNamee etc.

Atari delaying the game’s release when the “final” version from Rebellion
didn’t feature enough interactivity between the player and the environment
they were in.

For example, you’d walk into a room of face-hugger
eggs and there wouldn’t be much going on. (no Face Huggers scurrying around, eggs didn’t peel open etc).

The original 64×64 grid designs were random  large, wandering,

pointless mazes that made for  frustrating and boring experience.

Fox wanted some changes etc.

But Jane had to make it all about him, making out without him, there could be NO AVP.

And it burns people still fall for it.

The Waffling Taylor's, AVP Galway etc, interacting with Jane, believing every story he'd add along the way.

His spirtual AVP successor will have to be annouced as dead in the water at some point if his Twitter followers get restless, sure it'll be because he's no time now he's working with Nolan Bushnell etc.

That might well of been Mike Beaton, he flew out with Jane to Sunnyvale to join the Atari team working on AVP.

You also had an individual from the Kasumi Ninja team fly out to finish coding at Sunnyvale, another Brit.

He loathed the time there and his brother made the claim thst once his work was finished, he got drunk and smashed up the restrooms at Sunnyvale, but this part could be complete B. S.

Individuals from Eclipse also flew out to Sunnyvale.

Jane so often posts up that bloody photo of him and the AVP team gathered under the Atari Sunnyvale sign, making out he was part of some exclusive club, fortunate enough to walk the hallowed halls, yet he just joined your goodself, who was at Sunnyvale a lot longer, Mike Beaton and staff from Eclipse and HMS.

it was common practice for Atari to have the people they needed at Sunnyvale to finish projects back then, but only Jane makes such a song and dance about it.

? Actually pointless protecting the identity of the HMS person who flew to Sunnyvale, he was public with his rant at the time.

FACT FACT FACT FACT, FUCKING FACT !!!!!!!!!

Listen up dudes,

Three years ago, I got my hands on the most awesome development kit
imaginable. Atari Jaguar; and it had a great future, hardware that kicked
the megadrive and SNES into orbit.

Unfortunately, the Tramiels fucked everything up by screwing with every single
developer that still had faith (or were blind) to Atari's un-cooporative
development support. End result - every single game that Atari produced took
three times as long to develop as it should have. While Atari were fucking
around, Sega and Sony popped out their mega-machines and flushed the Jaguar
down the toilet. Believe me, Atari had their chance, and they blew it. They
had Jaguar ready and waiting a year before it hit the shops and all they had
to beat were the Megashite and Sneze. Unfortunately, they screwed up the
software by poor (not strong enough a word) development support. Atari
repeatedly altered software specificaions without warning, insisted on changes
to months of previously approved graphics design and demanded game performance
that simply was not possible on the current hardware, believing they had a
machine the power of ten super computers. Developer support was non-existent.
That's why, after three years, Jaguar owners still don't have access to more
games than the Oric. Believe me, 'cos I know the truth my friends; I worked as
a developer for Atari for two years and it was the worst two years of my life.
I saw a potential gold mine flushed straight down the bog; well out of my
control. Don't blame anyone else for the demise of Jaguar and Atari other than
the Tramiels. I know what I'm talking about.

A very bitter ex-Atari developer - Peter Wiseman

Atari 1975 (Nolan Bushnell) <> Atari 1996 (Dick Face Tramiels R.I.H)
Have faith in the man who founded the Atari legend; not those who destroyed it
!

Sell your Jaguars NOW, 'cos if you think your going to get support from the
Tramiels then you probably still believe in Santa Clause. Any further Jaguar
releases are purely for legal reasons !

May your SCSI hard drives have bad sectors for eternity, Sam and Leonard .....

What is hilarious to me, personally, is that there was a time Jane was publicly boasting about being involved in just about anything big. Always tweeting about directing or leading some such projects that went on to be worldwide successes or tech innovations.

Then when a handful of veteran devs called them out on Twitter, it all reverted to just AvP. When Jane realised that the internet has people on it, they scaled down their boasts to the only thing of note they ever accomplished. A 30 year old achievement, with nothing since.

One success in a career of lies.
