Br33d71 #1 Posted May 16, 2020 Hi, I recently got a C060592-11 (PL028) for use with my Atari 800. I plugged it in (unloaded) and the thing really buzzes / vibrates. I'm afraid to hook it up now. I measured 10.4 AC on it, so that should be allright. Thanks for any help on this. I don't want to fry my precious 800.... Atari#: C060592-11 / CA017964 (box, Europe) "AC Power Supply" Type: PL028, Made in U.K. Input: 220v~37W 50Hz Output: 9v~27VA Use with: 400,800,810,822,850,1010,1020,1050,XF551,PCF554 Kinds regards, John
archeocomp #2 Posted May 16, 2020 They all hum. I never use Atari PS for my 1050 because of it.
_The Doctor__ #3 Posted May 16, 2020 (edited) depends on the humm, a certain amount of hum for all transformers is normal... if it's very loud, that isn't good. The laminate around the wires and core could be rubbing off.... you can normally fix this by taking the the entire transformer out of the case and dunking it windings, plates and all in electronics grade lacquer. The hum is usually the metal plates wiggling around or sometimes loose windings and the plates interacting. Let the thing THOROUGHLY dry.... this normally protects everything and kills the noise.... another words, it make the chatterbox shut up. Br33d71 #4 Posted May 16, 2020 Hi guys, Thanks for replying. The hum isn't too bad, but the vibrating.... it's just strange. I have a slightly diffferent model PSU that looks the same but its absolutely quiet. I wanted a second one to power both the 800 and 1050. I heard about the laquer method, but this model cpu has no screws to open it. Anyway, I wanted to know if it's safe to use. Any way to find out? _The Doctor__ #5 Posted May 16, 2020 if the voltage is in the ranges folks stated are good loaded an unloaded, you're more than likely going to be just fine.

To absorb the vibrations a little, I glued 4 soft rubber feet / felt gliders underneath. Gtx., andY
Marius #7 Posted May 20, 2020 I december back in ... 1987 or do there was this review in the Dutch magazine "Atari Magazine" from the Atari Users Foundation (Stichting Atari Gebruikers). It reviewed the xf551. One of the cons of the xf551 was it's humming psu. And that is the same 9VAC psu. So it can be a common thing.
Gunstar #8 Posted May 21, 2020 (edited) I have Trak disk drive PSU that is identical to this Atari "universal" PSU. Sometimes it starts humming louder than normal, I merely tap on it and it quiets down. I've been using it with my 1050 for years in this condition without issue. But I have 7 Atari universal PSU's and they all hum, it's how I know they are working without powering something up. Almost all power packs hum, if you hold them up to your ear, at least the legacy PSU's. Edited May 21, 2020 by Gunstar
