Question to all Antonia 4MEG Users

Recommended Posts

Please don´t hit me,

I know, there exists tons of good stuff for RAM expanded ATARI´s up to 512k ?,

but can somebody tell me, which Tools, Programs or Demos using the advantage of the 1MB and especially the 2/4MB?

Or has anyone of the Antonia owners already programmed something of their own that takes advantage of the 4MB?

Thx.,

andY

Sparta DOS X will nicely use 1MB of RAM, as will "The Last Word" word processor.  With such an expanded system, you can have up to 10 16kB documents open at one time, or even link them for a single 160kB document.

I'm sorry - my machines max out at 1MB so I don't know anything that uses more than this.

No one here should hit you for voicing your disbelief or doubts about anything...

In normal conditions, 64KB to 256KB should suffice for most stand-alone programs. HOWEVER, you may want to consider:

  1. If you own U1MB or Incognito upgrades, you NEED more than 512 KBytes to be able to flash their ROMS on-board, from SDX (for instance).
  2. A mere "XLESS (large text file)" command from SDX 4.49-final will show you how 1MB of RAM can go long ways to read on-screen REALLY large text files (relative to A8's address space). Hitting "M" will show you base-memory and Extended RAM usage for buffering those large files.
  3. AtariBlast requires 1MB of RAM, as far as I recall. It will not run without it.
  4. In the absence of a mass-storage or internal HD, and more intensive SIO-based I/O, a 1MB expansion can prove GREAT as a large RAM-DISK.
  5. I am sure someone else will chine-in for Antonia's larger space.

Well, there are several tools and demos, but afaik very few games for 1MB (looks like Atari Blast is the only one atm). I do not know many A8 programs that require more than 1MB however...

I have several (mostly self-created) TIP-Animations in my collection that do require 1MB RAM, but loading them from diskette or ATR takes a while (also with harddisk, since I packed them). Not all of them are worth the loading time I think. You can copy them onto 360k and 720k disks or ATR images or try direct XEX loading. Two animations (Homer and LeeNorris) were done with Rastaconverter by an AA member here. Evil as I am, I also attach some 576k TIP-animations (but I will NOT upload the porn stuff). Besides, all TIP animations created by me were made for PAL and tested on real PAL Atari 800XL...

Mr. Atari created an approx. 1.4MByte movie (Gr. 9) of Yar's Revenge for harddisk - I made some small changes in the TB XL player, so it loads the movie into a MyDOS Ramdisk and plays it from there. It even works with smaller ramdisks (e.g. my 512k ramdisk), but I could not get it loaded/copied with ultraspeed and loading that amount of data with standard 19k2 Baud takes quite a while (loading takes longer than playback/watching). There is also an ANIMATion from Poland that requires 1MB, but I could not get it loading, since it absolutely wants to run from harddisk (IDE+, IDE-a, etc.)...

Regarding tools and utilities, there are also some programs available that support up to 1MB RAM, e.g. Inertia Player 4.5 by MadTeam (a MODplayer that supports Pokey and Covox), MOD Player 6502 by MadTeam (there is also MOD Player 65816), NEO-Tracker 1.7 and 1.8 by Epi (supports Pokey and Covox), the Small Printery (Printing program) and a few others.

In my opinion, if you want to load (or playback) programs with the A8 that do require 1MB or several MB, then it's best not to use XRAM or ramdisk, since loading takes quite long and the A8 does not have a packer that packs 10:1. Loading large PDM (8Bit sample) music works best from cart., like The!Cart, AVG-cart., SIDE-cart., etc. Even 256-colour movies can be loaded very fast from these devices with up to 500KB per second (50fps PAL or 60fps NTSC), thanks to phaeron's great movieplayer.

It would be rather senseless trying to load these music or movie files into XRAM. Allthough it is possible to install a second PIA chip and then control up to 256MB of RAM (or more?), there is no use for that amount of RAM in an A8. For me 1MB is the "cutting point" for XRAM in an A8 (my personal + subjective view)...

Last not least, similar topics came up before, do a forum search with keywords like "1MB".

Yes ya´re right, but I´m wondering, if some Antonia-Users develop there own stuff...

...and some things, that seem pointless in this way, are sometimes done anyway - simply because you able to realize it ?

Guess you have to wait a few more years until 2MB and 4MB are more common in the A8 scene and more programs have been made for them...

I really didn't know anything about Antonia before, but by a chance, I stumbled across a 1200XL Antonia thread here and I thought, there are couple of useful tools for the 4Meg available?.....

no, 4MB may be available as an AXLON standard memory extension.

That is NICE!

More than the immediate use, it seems to me it is the only one of its kind... Never heard of any 4MB Axlon-compatible expansion...

I don't honestly know if I've ever used the 2/4MB setting on my ANTONIA.  I generally just leave it at 576K or 1MB; both settings meet pretty much all of my needs.  What I really do appreciate about the ANTONIA is that it has the 8 open configurable and easily selectable OS slots.

Hmmm, the final XEX version of Pang by MadTeam requires only 192K RAM, but maybe someone created an 8MBit (1MB) atarimax cart. of it ?!?

Could well be that I mixed that up. Found the game nice looking but did not particularly like it, so I never tried to play it on real hardware.
