Old Skool AV TV... how to hook up HDMI to AV?

Hello,

I have an old CRT TV, with AV jacks.

How do I hook up a new HDMI game to AV jacks?

I always get confused on the HDMI to AV adapters, as the ones I have looked at don’t fully explain which direction the adaption is (HDMI to AV, or AV to HDMI)... and I don’t want to buy the wrong one.

I want to hook up new HDMI games to OLD CRT TV with AV jacks.

Thank you for help.

I have this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01KW3MU1G

It "works" but it squishes 4:3 to be abit skinnier. I use it with a ROKU on my bedroom CRT, if you are watching something like an older tv show on netflix that is in SD it will look a little off... you get used to it though!  It works best with converting a 16:9 input to a 4:3 output. Not perfect by any means, but it gets the job done. It does not work well with the Retron 77 - picture is just off and squished.

To get a good picture with the R77 on a 4 to 3 crt with an HDMI to AV converter, you probably need to turn on "stretch" in the Retron's video options.  I also have zoom set to 275%(this may be the default, I don't recall.)  You might also wish to adjust the overscan option as well to your particular screen.

Thanks for the info!  I think i just hooked the '77 up, saw that it was a crappy picture and then put it away and went back to Av modded junior! I guess I will have to give it another go :)

That reminds me that you'll also want to turn off scan lines.  They don't look good at all on a device that already has real scan lines.

There ARE better potential solutions using former professional downscaling units, but they're expensive and require potential recoding of hardware.

This reminds me of how I've seen some Blu-Ray players with composite output in addition to the HDMI... like what's the point. This is different here and an option to use dedicated consoles with retro games on them on a real CRT would be great.
