Cybernome Atari Cassette

Recommended Posts

Got this recently in a game bundle. Atarimania rates it as very rare. Does anyone have any info on it and possible value?

Thanks in advance

first order of business would be to make a high quality duplicate and wave files for .cas conversion and- if there is any sound/music.

I'd peruse the preservation site and thread to see how many verified copies have been made or if others are needed.

The tape was dumped previously and is available at the usual suspect sites... sometimes things are different though...

Thank you. I have messaged Atarimania and am awaiting a reply. I have a USB cassette capture which I can record the data.

Thanks a lot!

The cassette file is out there but needs to be verified against a second copy so recording the data would be perfect.

I’ve messaged you on Facebook :)

I dumped mine a few months ago. The Atarimania rarity is quite subjective. I bought this tape for just a few (under 5) pounds 🙂

Yes supply and demand. I’ve had a few games come and go recently and the market at the moment seems to be a sellers market. Depends how many people want it right now!

If Fred has the tape, then I have a copy (with some exceptions of course)...  ;-)

But since I do not like CAS files, I either have a pure data copy (not bootable!) on a DOS 2 disk or a (bootable) CSIM copy. So attached you can find Cybernome (8k) and Shatablast (10.5k) as datacopies and CSIM copies. Both programs are single-stage tapes (so *.CAS and *.TAP is the same data).

I lowered the rating to "9" (consider it a low "9"). I believe nobody had located an original when that "10" was assigned but several copies have appeared these past years.

Ah brilliant so nothing is needed from my copy for preservation purposes?

I think the preservation sites use my dump. Your dump can be used to verify my dump ;-)

Ok. You’d be wanting an audio file? I’ve not dumped a tape before

Yes, use your USB cassette capture device with Audacity (open source software). Record the audio as stereo WAV-file and make sure the datatrack (the beeps) is on the right channel.

Marceau made a great tutorial: https://www.atarinside.com/blog/index.php/tutorial-how-to-dump-an-old-atari-cassettetape-to-a-cas-or-wav-file/

You can skip the a8cas part. Creating the WAV-files will be sufficient for the a8cas specialists in the preservation projects ;-)

Excellent audio quality @djrodderz !

I was able to create a cas-file from your dump, thank you!

@Farb Can your guys clean this cas-file, so you will have a second copy to verify the dump of my cassette.

Thanks again @djrodderz 👍👍👍

Do you mind sharing what USB cassette device you used?

I know you did not ask me ;-) But I use this one: https://www.amazon.co.uk/ION-Audio-Portable-Converter-Conversion/dp/B002XZGUPY

In my experience these kind of cheap tape devices create better results for atari cassette tapes than an Hi-Fi tapedeck with a separate USB audio converter (which I also used, but got worse results).

Do you hear any humming sounds when making recordings like some of the reviews say?

No, not at all. I am now using my second ION Tape Express. I have used my first one very extensively for about 4 years and then the play head came loose. As they are so cheap (especially second hand) I did not try to repair it and bought another one. This one I am using for about 2 years now and it is still going strong.

I'll give that one a shot. I have a LOT of tapes to make. :)

Including these that are on the way.

Thanks to both of you. :)

I uploaded the WAV and CAS to the processing folder.

I’ve probably got a few Commodore 64 tapes of interest that may be worth backing up too if anyone knows a similar website that would be interested.
