Auto Racing Original Steering

Recommended Posts

I have a question about Auto Racing.  I was on Intvfunhouse it doesn't list 1113-0720 USA or HK version of Auto Racing.

Both have the original steering.

It does list the 1113-0820 USA as original steering.

Now the question.

If there is a HK manual, is there an HK cartridge with original steering?

I have tested mine but found none.

When you say "original steering", which mode are you meaning. I believe that the "development history" currently on the BlueSkyRangers site, which was written by Keith and brought straight across from the intellivsionlives site does not have it correct, but I have not gone back to fix it yet.

Intvfunhouse has it all documented with images of the instructions.

http://www.intvfunhouse.com/games/auto.php

1113-0720 would be the canadian bilingual version of the instructions.  They should have the revised version of the steering instructions; that would be the "realistic" left/right steering as documented on intvfunhouse.  If that is not the case, it would have been a mistake.  Does the cartridge in the Canadian bilingual package have the revised rom? It should.

By original steering, I'm referring to turning relative to car's orientation.  Revised steering is clockwise or counterclockwise from 12 o'clock (3 o'clock or East turns right and 9 o'clock or West turns left).

While we're talking about corrections, I tried to use the BSR History site to map out the first 42 Mattel releases chronologically, but I believe the numbering is messed up.  Some of the earlier numbered games have later release dates than later numbered games.  #16 was skipped and there are two #42s.  Intellivoice not counted.  I'm not sure if I should trust the dates or the numbering.  Here's my summary (inconsistencies in yellow):

All my manuals are loose so I don't know the Cart that came with it to check the manual vs ROM.

Neither of my 113-0720 are bi-lingual!

Are the steering instructions the same in the bilingual book.  I don't have a canadian bilingual auto racing but I would think it came with a cartridge with revised steering.

Can you post photos of the steering instructions on pages 7/8 as well as page 12.

I wonder where those english only 0720 instructions were used.

I also have both of those English-only 720 manuals and can confirm that they both have the original screen-relative steering. The French-Canadian 720 manual has the car-relative steering.

We have not located a Hong Kong cartridge with the original ROM in our supply. (Or in the INTV supply, though we have not tested all that we have)

Also, I have added a sentence to the Development History of Auto Racing on the site as a quick fix to Keith's error.

Thank GOD I never had this version of the game!  I have several copies of Auto Racing and never had this version.

It was also one of the first 4 or 5 games I had in 1980 and this is NOT the version I had.

Didn't we have this discussion once upon a time, and someone compared the ROMs to determine which steering was the original?

Perhaps. But in any case, it is clear from the manuals that Keith had it backwards and the screen-relative steering was the original steering and the car-relative steering is the later steering.

Over the years I have acquired several Auto Racing carts.  So I will never know which is my original from1980?

However, I know the steering has been car-relative for every copy I have ever had and it was one of my very first games.

So, if this running change happened, it was right out of the gate!

However, I am on the east coast, maybe the way they were distributed had an impact?

Does anyone have the screen-relative version?  Is it Blue or White label?

I have a few of each, I picked up some white label looking for the hidden basketball game (I think)  this was 10-15 years ago?

On that note... Anyone ever verify the hidden basketball game?

No, stadium mud buggies doesn't have the option; motocross does.

I imagine Mattel had complaints right away after originally shipping Auto Racing.  It would have been months before the revised version showed up.  Unless they recalled all the ones in the stores the original roms would have been in the stores for a while.

If the english only -0720 were used in canadian packages there would be a corresponding french only instruction book.  Does someone have the english only -0720 in its original box?

Darn. I was hoping I was missing something.

I like motocross. It was a nice upgrade to auto racing.

Building tracks was a cool feature and I love the independent clocks so much better than  'AHEAD" in Auto Racing.

Staying on the track is pretty easy in motocross, but for newbies, it is very unforgiving!

Plus, I used to love exploring in Auto Racing.  This should have been even more accessible on a dirt bike!   LOL

Yup, that's the thread I was talking about, was reading through it yesterday. The conclusion was all the evidence pointed toward screen relative being the original, with the exception of Keith's entry on IntellivisionLives. With Steve's addendum, it looks like everything is squared away now.
