not necessarily been modified to work on the skunk as other roms that work just fine on the skunk also work fine on the GD, hence wanting to to check the crc's

No, skunk ROMs are not compatible. Likewise ‘normal’ ROMs do not run on the skunk without modification. If it runs on the skunk it’s a 16bit ROM.

 

If any ROMs which function in the skunk run on the GD it’s because the menu has detected they are 16bit and patched them on load. There will be a message to this effect. If for some reason it’s not recognised it you will indeed get a red screen.
 

Likewise if it’s been ‘locked’ to the skunk, which some are, it will fail and you may get a red screen.

 

As Doom2 is a ROM hack I’m not sure of its origins.
