Bob Decrescenzo (Pac Man Plus) Interview

Cousin Vinnie

Recommended Posts

The renown homebrew video game programmer Bob Decrescenzo (aka Pac Man Plus) gives Funkmaster V (aka Cousin Vinnie) the rundown. In this interview, Bob talks about why he makes games for the 7800, how he chooses what titles to make, which popular game he almost threw the towel in on, which game he DID scrap, the development of the XM module, the passing of Ken Silders, amazing projects on the horizon and much more. Also: Funkmaster V says "the F" to a very nice man and they rap about Roof Pooper. #atari7800 #homebrew #atari

I can't say 'thank you' enough - you were very gracious, and left me speechless numerous times.  Thanks, man.

I missed the 3rd game you mentioned you are working on after Adventure 3 and Defender... was it "Resolve" or "Revolve"? Maybe it's my ears but could not find it on the forums. If you have a link, would love to follow along its progress on the forums! Thanks again Bob for all you do keeping the 7800 dream alive! :)

I enjoyed the interview and watched it in three parts due to the length. It is not difficult to tell which one of you two is speaking,  you seem to have polar opposite personality types !  ;)

Great job on adding all the associated gameplay footage and pictures! I had already forgotten a couple games that Bob has done over all these years! Even though I own some! He really did play the largest role to revitalize interest in the 7800, which has one of the most disappointing original libraries of any game console I've ever seen. I am recovering from surgery and can't sit up to play many games right now, but I'm really eager to hook up the 7800 and explore the Bob games that I own some more.

He is a complete sweetheart... I don't think I know anyone in my life that humble and gracious. I was on my best behavior and still sounded like an asshole. He's a good man. I'm glad you enjoyed it and I hope you recover.

Guys, you are all so incredible.  Thank you so much...  ...and no Vinnie, you definitely did NOT sound like an a$$hole.  You were very cool.  Again, thank you for even thinking of me to do this.

I didn't think that part at the end was going to get published, when I started talking about the NES and SMB - I thought he stopped recording. ?

Thank you - you guys are part of what keeps me doing this.  I'd like to hit at least 30 games (I'm at 22 now) icon_grouphug.gif

Well, I did end the interview... but I thought what you said was pretty interesting, and it let people hear "behind the scenes" I think that's always interesting too

Thank you very much Funkmaster V and PacManPlus for this interview !!!   I listen to the whole thing in one play through.

I purchased several of Bob's games just this past Christmas 2019 from Atariage !!!  - Baby Pac-Man, Super Circus, Crystal Quest and Fail Safe.

Bob, Thank You Very Much for an Atari 5200 Countermeasure sequel on the Atari 7800 !!!

Countermeasure was the first game I purchased when I bought my Atari 5200 back in the day, and really enjoyed it too !!!

Bob, I couldn't make out during the interview, your answer to your favorite game that you have made.

Could you post the answer here in the forum?

"What is your favorite Atari 7800 game/or game that you have made?"

Bob while I have your attention...I'm very much looking forward to your Works In Progress (WIP) as you stated in the interview.

(I've been really wondering what your next game is going to be after Baby Pac-Man)

If your tallying votes - Adventure III would be my top pick, followed very closely by Defender (or perhaps a Defender/Stargate all in one, like Frenzy/Berserk ?). I'll be honest I'm less excited about ReZolve.

I do love the title, and I think the concept is solid.  I also like that it is an original game, which the Atari 7800 needs more of too.

I did check out the WIP photos.  I will strongly agree that the Atari 7800 needs more games like this, as you said in the interview, but I'm just more excited about the other 2 projects.

(I'm not a really a Robotron 2084 fan, although I love Smash TV).

Also, Pitfall III is still a great idea, as you spoke of in the interview.

Perhaps you could do a team up with David Crane on it ?

Funkmaster V - thank you again for this interview !!!

Perhaps you could get an interview with the person(s) involved with the Atari 7800 XM module in the near future ?

or some of the other home-brew Atari 7800 makers ?

or even some of the programmers from GCC, that worked on the Atari 7800 and early games ?

I had said Bentley Bear ('s Crystal Quest)... but I'm kind of starting to lean toward Baby Pac-Man now. :)

I have a feeling the order you listed the next three games I'm doing is the order I'm going to attack them.  With ReZolve I was never sure what direction that was going in; hopefully I'll have more of an idea by the time I finish the other two.

Thanks for the Interview. I enjoyed it very much. Looking forward to the videogamecritc review as well. I'm not a podcast specialist myself and probably couldn't record in better quality myself, but found especially your recorded voice quality lower than many other podcasts. Maybe that could be improved with a pop filter or some post-processing. Please consider this a friendly critique which should in no way detract you from doing further podcasts.

Bob doesnt have Skype or Zoom so I had to record it over a phone. I spent about two hours in the studio getting it to sound that good. If you think that was bad you should have heard it before. I almost considered re-recording my lines in the studio.... but then I was like "NAHHHHHH"

Ahh yeah... the low bit rate, compressed, underwater sound of the modern cell phone. Recognized it immediately. One of the main reasons I hate using the damn things and have for years. Not normally even into podcasts. That said, was a fun interview! My one critique is it could have used a *little* less funk and a bit more Bob.

On a serious note and regarding the SQ... your personality more than makes up for it. Looking forward to hearing you (the real FMV) and the VGC next!   :)
