Thoughts on an updated version of Space Dungeon?

Recommended Posts

Has Atari or anyone ever thought about updating Space Dungeon like Space Invaders, Defender, Xevious, Tempest, Robotron, etc... This game is reason alone to own the 5200... Or is this a classic game that should be left alone? Your thoughts... :ponder:

Left alone. Besides, there are too many other games that could be wriiten for the 5200, like some of the Colecovision titles.

It never occured to me that this game would need to be modified, actually. I've grown up with the 5200 version, and so I'm a bit biased, but it seems to have an outstanding implementation, even better than the arcade version. In fact, 5200 Space Dungeon is my favorite classic game-- see my avatar at left :D Obviously you don't agree about some part of the game, although you don't say why. What would you like to see improved if you could?

This isn't really the right forum for this question.

This is a 5200 game, and no technical details were presented.. I see this as a fine forum for this question. BTW, why haven't you haven't answered any of those private messages I sent you :ponder: ;)

Excellent point Cal...

I too have sent Mr. Bane a Private message or two in my time and haven't gotten replies. I guess we are just Spam after all...?

BTW...back on Topic. I see no reason to fix what I think most would consider not broken in the first place?

:D

I don't see why the hell not :D If you got a gumption to take Space Dungeon and add a couple more things in or change it around. Or even make a new one from scratch with new features.. I say go for it! What's the problem? :) Do what you like :D

When I bought my 5200 brand new when it originally came out from Hill's Dep't Store  I bought all the remakes( Pacman, Space Invader's, Defender, Super Breakout, etc). Never did I imagine how good that Space Dungeon would be! I mean even today, this game has stood the test of time... Very easy concept, nice graphics, but still a hard game to this day! And very hard to find complete in the box also, lol... I love the game... My thoughts are more along the line of what it would look like with updated graphics, newer enemies, more rooms and areas to explore but yet still try to keep the two joystick effect somehow...

The reason I opined this is the wrong forum is because he's talking about updating classic arcade games for next-gen systems (as has happened with the games he cited-- "Space Invaders, Defender, Xevious, Tempest, Robotron"). Yes, there was a 5200 version of Space Dungeon. But so what? An update would be based on the arcade version, not the 5200 version.

Actually, I was talking about an update to the 5200 version since this was the only version ever released... ;)

Same diff.

Anwyays, the game met with very little success, and is largely forgotten.

Taito doesn't care about it, and it's their game.

Since Space Dungeon is one of the best loved 5200 games, why bother to update it on that platform. Its clearly a good game, implemented well, are there any 5200 programmers out there able to even make the game as well as Atari did in tha 1st place, I doubt it greatly....

Would it not be better expend programming energies on creating new content of a high quality, those unported games that hit the 2600 but not the 5200 (Phoenix, Arcade Road Runner etc) or better yet original games?!?!

I guess I'm not seeing how Space Invaders, Defender, Xevious, Tempest, and Robotron are analogous then, since none of them have been updated either. :ponder:

And like Jack said, what's there to update? Space Dungeon pretty well rides the edge of what the 5200 can do at a playable frame rate.

You changed that after I replied last time.

The arcade version WAS released.

The 5200 version is based off the arcade version.

I've often wondered why Atari didn't do a version of Phoenix for the 5200 myself.

It would kick major Ascii!
