Galaxian & Space Invaders - multiple PMGs per line. How?

I was going through some YouTube videos the other day and came across one which explained that Space Invaders was one of the first games that pushed the 2600 beyond what it was designed for. I hadn't realised it before but are all the invaders PMGs? The most obvious example, though, looking at the resolution of the characters is Galaxian. I played that game a LOT BITD. Love the 2600 version. And yet I've only just realised that all the characters are sprites.

 

Anyone here care to fill me in on how it's possible to display multiple independent sprites on screen, complete with collision detection, without flicker?
