Atari 8Bit Game Patches

Hi,

So, I'm trying to test it with one file.

Mr. Robot.

I tried using the XVI32 but it is acting up (doesn't work all the time when I hit OK, etc...) I'm running Windows 10. I tried other editors.

I tried searching for Infinite Lives = [C195C1D8:XXEAEAXX]

C1 95 C1 D8

I can't find it.

I did try to reverse the first two

95 C1 just to test.

However, I know is there because in Altirra, I'm able to find it and I can display (da,dw,etc..) the values found at the location.

Ideas?

The "version" of Mr. Robot you are searching is probably different or it has been compressed with an "executables packer"(I can't stand those things). Try using the one from the Homesoft Collection Disk #54.

Oh, I can see why. Great, I will use the HomeSoft Collection.

Strange that both are ATR but I guess an ATR can be compressed.

This is why I was hoping to find a place to download the games already with cheats LOL. I totally get it why you are opposed to it and it makes sense, but it will much easier. I never finished Mr. Robot but I was so much better. I'm stock on Level 2 now.

By the way, I think Mr. Robot is such a cool game.

Yes, Mr. Robot is one of my favorites also. You've inspired me to make a few more fun cheat patches for the game.

Mr. Robot (additional cheat patches):
====================================

Don't Spawn Alienfires = [206F98:EAEAEA] (first occurance only)
Bombs Don't Explode = [DE3640:A901EA]
Force Shield Stays On = [C6D8C9:A5XXXX]
Getting Only Two Dots Finishes Level = [008D12:02XXXX][EE1254:EAEAEA] (must use both)

Emulator Tip:

-To warp to another level, edit memory location $BF with $0 to $15(desired level with 0 being first level) then kill player.

Its not so much the ATR is compressed but either files or data on it are, its the one drawback with patches like Eddies, if the disk is compressed then it will not find the bytes to be patched (or may by freak luck find wrong places). Thankfully the Atari isn't too bad with compressed stuff, if you look at the C64 then its pretty much all compressed and all parts of the disk get decompressed separately. Don't get me wrong, disk patches are great, its just making sure you get the right version of the disk used by the maker of the patches.

As for Mr. Robot, still a huge fave with me...Even just to listen to the great Mr Gilbertson music...

Yup, not everyone is an ace player or may have health problems that make gaming harder so patches like these area godsend for some. I used to train everything that moved, be it snes, PSX, Amiga, C64 etc etc but what Eddy does that is so much better than simple trainers is to search for the little extra's that really are neat, like the Faster Lightning death in Hardhat willie, many cheaters myself included would not bother with that. It just shows his code reading skills are both great but creative as well.

What I also like about the patch system is that people often moan that a game with a trainer menu is too much of a temptation and ruins the game (nonsense), with the patch system the user has to go out of their way to get the cheat so clearly wanted to cheat..No excuses..

I agree, that is total nonsense. I guess there are some very weak-willed people out there if they complain about trainer menus, if they don't want to use them, it's not like crack for crack addicts and if it is to some, that's a personal problem they should find help for. I myself still prefer no cheats, but the day may come when I need some, but trainers never bothered me, I just ignore them.

Why thanks for the compliments and yes, this is the fun part. The usual infinite lives and energy are relatively easy to find and implement. But I find some of these games have features in them that can be modified to make the game easier, more enjoyable, or more tolerable. And the patch system is very similar to the "Game Genie" idea the NES had in that you can pick and choose what patches you like. Another reason not to distribute pre-patched games as everyone may not like all the patches.

Sometimes it can get creative. I can be working on a game and just get an idea right in the middle of it all. For example, while working on the Pacman game I thought "what if the ghosts just stayed blue" and I was able to find the switch and ended up finding it in Ms. Pacman and Jr. Pacman too.
