MaxwellRetros
Hello guys, I am hoping someone can help or advise. I recently bought an Atari 520 STFM and when plugging it in the disk drive makes an awful sound and I get a red screen. I opened the disk drive and saw that the belt had broke. I think that it would probably be an easy repair but the issue I have is the red screen? Would the red screen be because of the broken disk drive, or is that a separate issue altogether? Thanks Mark
Zogging Hell
Usual steps on this would be to reseat all the socketed chips and check the PSU voltages (preferably recap the PSU or replace it). The disk drive is indeed an easy fix (Cool Novelties on ebay sell a replacement belt if you are in UK/Europe, might be a bit pricey on the postage to get to the US), it shouldn't cause a red screen. Having said that you may wish to swap out the drive for a more modern disk drive or a Gotek as that drive may well be single sided if it is old enough to be belt driven.
