Getting the HD floppy to work on Mega STe

Been reading a lot of things on this, can I use the included WD1772 0202 or must I go to the C302434 Ajax to get reliable HD floppy working?  I do have the Epson 340 and when I hooked it up, flip switch 7, I did get the HD format button in the window and started to reformat an HD floppy, but it stopped about half-way thru.  Kind of wondering about the "selected" WD1772 as I have read the 0202 version is one of the "hand-selected" for use at 16 mHz.  Any ideas or suggestions?  Thanks
