svhovater
hi all Not really sure where to start, but the system seems to have been working. Lately, from SDX when I invoke a command like "DIR D1", the console presents messages like "Symbol SETBOOT 154 Symbol not defined" At times, some commands produce a boatload of similar messages about symbols not being defined. Maybe it's because I've been spending more time in Atari lately, but I don't recall having seen these messages before. Ideas? thanks, Steve
svhovater
I removed the Side2 and still saw these. Then I turned of RespeQT, booted from Side2 SDX, still see them. Scratching head..
flashjazzcat
Sounds like catastrophic instability. I have seen this exact symptom when ROM is unreadable.
svhovater
the final test - no respeqt, no side2, and I still see these. Booting sdx from U1MB. that localizes the problem, at least. Starting to think configuration. I admit the possibility that sdx on the U1MB could have (somehow) a corrupted image. My side2 boots as D9:. My config.sys: USE BANKED DEVICE SPARTA 6 DEVICE SIO DEVICE ATARIDOS ; DEVICE INDUS 4 DEVICE ULTIME DEVICE JIFFY DEVICE RAMDISK
svhovater
Jon, thanks for the response. I think I'm convinced that it's the U1MB at this point. Suggestions? Reflash? thanks, Steve
flashjazzcat
If you disable everything on the U1MB except extended RAM and SIDE2's SDX shows the same problem, I don't think a bad flash can be to blame.
svhovater
well. progress perhaps. I had changed the U1MB to use the OS ROM for altirra. I changed it back to XL OS 1.3, and for the moment, at least, seems we're back to stability. So, self-inflicted wound, I think. thanks for the idea. flashjazzcat
How odd!
svhovater
well, I spoke too soon. Problem persists. So, I disabled SDX in U1MB, using Side2 SDX. Still seeing the problem. Reset U1MB to defaults. No change. Running out of ideas.

It may be time to take the machine apart and check for problems with wiring, sockets, etc.
svhovater
I recently swapped the keyboard to another machine for testing. apparently my wiring is sloppy. I've taken the cover off, ensured that the wires going from the U1MB to the CPU are not interfering, and now running without cover. Seems to be better. Guess I'd better clean up my wiring. Sigh.
+Nezgar
Run an extended RAM test: http://atari.sk/extended-ram-test-0-22-0-xram0220-xex/ make sure the stock OS ROM self-test doesn't show red bars for ROM Run a RAM test of the base 64K, don't have a link for software based ones handy at the moment, but there is this OS ROM replacement tester: https://www.jammarcade.net/shoestrings-atari-8bit-ram-tester/
