npturton #1 Posted July 19, 2020 Hello All Managed to get back to my 8 bit stuff eventually I bought a new XL/XE 5v 2A PSU from ebay, connected to one of my 800xl and the unit will not switch on via the switch on the 800 (The 5v PSU is a Linksys from a Cisco switch - so quality shouldn't be an issue?) The only way I seem to be able to get this to work is to leave the switch on and then plug in the PSU, this powers up the 800 fine As soon as I revert to the switch, I doesn't come back on Would people recon this a switch issue? I don't understand though that if I leave the switch on its ok, resistance on the Switch or bad PSU? Please advise
Rybags #2 Posted July 19, 2020 800XL? Maybe the PS senses no load and goes into some sort of sleep mode? Can you measure it's voltage in load/no load situations?

_The Doctor__ #4 Posted July 19, 2020 other thing to check is solder on power jack legs to the PCB and switch cleanliness, give the switch a good cleaning. Does sound like a sensing power supply but we've seen this behavior with cracked solder joint to the jack before.
Voxel #6 Posted July 21, 2020 Initially I'd check the switch for soldering, if fine then suspect it's oxidised and apply some contact cleaner (or a very light oil) on the contacts. You may just want to try flicking the switch repeatedly ( a good few times in case it's just oxide) before you open to see if it clears up. It will not clear if a solder pad has dried and cracked during storage.
