I remember getting my Vita in December 2011 with Uncharted a few days after launch. That was impressive as hell for the time. Still use my Vita literally every day~

I was very impressed with the Vita. I loved playing super meat boy on the go. It was the last time I was impressed by a new system.
Before that I think it was the Nintendo 64. I was subscribed to Next Generation Magazine for a year before the Ultra 64 came out. It was a fun time to be a kid and a gamer. I felt like the N64 really delivered and more on the hype I read every month.

As has been proven by this current generation, consoles live and die on their exclusive software library, which is why the PS4 dominated so heavily this time around. Xbox clawed some back with the frankly excellent Xbox One X and it's backwards compatibility. Though I imagine the market for enhanced 360 and Xbox games is much more limited to people like me ;) The next gen has shown nothing of interest in terms of what's coming. Not a sausage.

Otherwise it looks like we're STILL going to be stuck at 30fps for most games, a trend that started with the PS3 and 360. So games look great but run horribly rather than making them run good and scaling back the graphical shinies appropriately. Developers already saying that they're aiming for 4k30fps is a monumental dissapointment.

The fast drives are nice, their capacity is utterly laughable. I'm sat here with a typically un-upgradable Xbox (internal drive) with 4tb of HDDs stuck out of the back of it. The PS4 has the biggest drive it can fit in there at 2TB because they didn't leave enough physical space to fit 15mm tall larger capacity drive and another hanging off the back. Because you can't just put a disc in and play a game anymore. All well and good while the servers are running, but in 10 years time when the servers are gone if they're not installed, the vast majority of physical media will be coasters. Because most games on disc, if they're even on there, are broken and required at minimum a day one patch. A bullshit practice that I think I hate more than any other from this generation.

I'll do what I did with this gen. I'll wait until the cost reduced 'slim' models come along in 3 years time. If there are some exclusives worth playing by then, I'll probably pick one up. But at launch, nah, there's just nothing enticing there at all.

It’s almost like Sony and Microsoft are thinking where are you gonna go to get a Super powerful next Gen gaming system? Of course people will buy one at some point.

The more I learn about the next gen consoles the more my initial stance that I'm not gonna be buying in anytime soon is solidified.

Pretty much the same for me, although it's been like this since the PS2 era - always end up waiting a few years before picking up a console.  PS2 era was more a budget issue, but the PS3 and PS4 eras were more "meh" until I saw at least a handful of games I knew I wanted.

I can easily wait to see what kind of BS they attempt to pull with changing how the console industry works (think about the initial announcements Microsoft had for the xbone which resulted in me to this day just not giving a flying flip about the console. Easy to do anyway when they barely have anything I personally care to play.)

So long as at least 5 PS5 games come out that end up being Must Play for me, I'll probably eventually pick it up. But if they try to repeat the kinds of things Microsoft wanted to do before backtracking over the backlash (And remember technically Sony had near identical plans for the PS4 until they saw how people responded to Microsoft's announcement) then I'll just axe consoles from my diet for good and finally start in on my massive backlog of games.

After thinking about it, I think I'll just stick with the XBone and the PS4. Hopefully, some peoples will try to sell what they have to get the funds for the new one so I may benefit from a good console and games lot. I have the Xbox One X already so I just miss the PS4.

I know that there's backward compatibility with the PS5 and XBox Serie X but I don't really need the new stuff for the time being.

That's exactly how I feel... Yes you can get better "rendering" of 3D graphics, but it seems that the upcoming consoles are removing features instead of adding them.  And yes I'm talking about Microsoft who are getting rid of things like Blu-Ray playback and media remotes just to appeal to hardcore gamers who say, "Derp, who the hell watches movies on a gaming console!?"

Maybe I should just get a Amazon Fire Stick for streaming and eventually replace my Xbox One with a Nintendo I mean Xbox Series S (Can't afford a Series X and a 4K TV it requires...)

I know I replied to this two months ago, but more and more info have come out, also some idea floating and some facts.  Now we're seeing prices, and then companies like Sony batting around the idea of shoving their own IP on the PC format too which MS was already doing anyway as they own that OS(Windows) anyway.  I can see that happening as it would cause Sony to lose out on a good grab of buyer interest who just don't want an expensive console every few years.

From seeing this digital format only somewhat cheaper box, to the non-crippled own your media notably more expensive choice, I don't like the direction of it all, nor how they're trying to goad things from either.  The fact they both can't seemingly just like last gen shove out a game franchise update that surpasses the overall play quality of the previous generation is very inspiring.....inspiring to keep with my thoughts of ignoring both and saving some serious time and money.  As third parties have more or less given up on both to shovel their wares exclusively to play for the lucrative Steam(etc) PC market where their games can really shine without being held back by old hardware in a new shiny package it's like why bother?

It's funny really, unless you're a Nintendo fan alone, there really is NO motivation to buy dedicated gaming hardware anymore.  Android and iOS have their other choices as the companies allow(far more obviously with android) and therefore they're ahead of that curve that console makers are going down now too.  Unless you can provide such unmatched quality from self driven titles and won't put them on other hardware so that people still buy your hardware, it's better just go go that route.  Nintendo has an unique way about it with their games, and their handheld/console hybrid that works.  You just can't compress that tier of quality into a handheld that MS and Sony will bow down to copying, the closest being an expensive higher end gaming laptop, which isn't the same.

Someone will fire back who get hurt by this saying, but but PC master race, and it'll cost you $1000 to do this.  Yeah, no, if you can make it yourself, and shop your parts, you can get it for less, and unlike the console, you can upgrade if needed to add years to it later yet.  And in the end, the PC can do hundreds of useful things, the console only does the few limited choices the designer whats you to do (short of hack/modding it.)

This is how I’m seeing it so far for this upcoming generation, and many others are as well. It’s increasing the demand for retro consoles like crazy on eBay lately. Have you looked at Gamecube game prices lately?

I think it’s safe to say that Microsoft and Sony should take a close look at 1983. They iterated to safely on this next generation of systems. They are also banking on their back catalog accessible through a paid subscription saving their asses. My wife was just discussing with me yesterday about purchasing a PS4 again. It’s sad but they really don’t have anything to offer yet. I’ll think about buying one of these new consoles next year.

I'm impressed M. S have played Sony at their own hand and waited till the last moment to reveal pricing for their new hardware and the entry level machine coming in far lower than expected.

Rumours seem to suggest it's forcing Sony to rethink the pricing of it's Playstation 5 models, but the small HDD and limited Ram of the entry level Xbox aren't to my liking.

But there still hasn't been a WOW factor game annouced on either platform for myself to justify moving from my Playstation 4 anytime soon.

Yeah that's a good point, it's not just the traditionally considered 'retro' stuff people still make games based on (the 8-16bit look) but now we're seeing the early 21st century systems having a hard upswing in prices on the games, even the hardware is tipping out of the $20 toilet the stuff tends to fall in too.  Those games that are, and often, as always, it's a good bite of it being Nintendo, can not be had off their hardware short of using sketchy means.  And as you pointed out, GC... $300+ for Cubivore.  The $100-300 range with Fire Emblem, Chibi Robo, Hypergrind, Gotcha Force, and the list is growing.  I've seen people paying up at that $100 level now even for stuff like Wind Waker which is stupid and this is not just pandemic pricing as that's collapsing but the games are not.

The current systems and the upcoming late this year, they're offering NOTHING nearly of value to say, hey i want to drop $300 on this console, $600 on that one.  Most the games, including their own looking at this dying gen for MS and Sony's comments about the next, to PC as well.  And they're not going to intentionally gimp the games on PC, you'll get far better frame rate, frame time, resolutions, and control options too.  Sure you may drop a thousand on a PC vs a bit less on a console, but the PC does so so much more and lasts far longer, including games not being terminally trapped and screwed a few years down the line.  PS4 even bored me, had one about just two years, and 1/2 that or more was a movie box as the games blew compared to PS3 for me unique to it.

People mock NIntendo for one gimmick after another, and the WiiU was a dumpster fire, but the Switch has a unique angle, and maybe that's what the others need to to still be desirable by gamers in the longer run because the companies with their high prices, locked games, and trying to force the digital only rental 'buy' of games isn't going to help things either.  Perhaps it's time they cool it, make slightly less 'nice' hardware and make a hybrid too people can get equal satisfaction at home and the go seamlessly.

Xbox $299 with a console smaller than the S apparently for the Entry level 2k 1140p system?

$499 for Series X super 4K Arcade machine?

These are good prices, Sony will have to cut the price to compete with Xbox in it's stronger territories. I only wish Microsoft revealed Xbox 360 sales, they still haven't for some reason.

I just learned one of the differences in how Sony and Microsoft do business. While Sony allocates consoles to all their resellers, ordered by sales volume, Microsoft doesn't even respond when their resellers try to contact them and then reveals they will release the new console through a select few retailer channels. It appears they no longer bother about standalone game specialist stores, but go all in on the warehouses and biggest web shops. Time will tell if that is a good or bad move. As it looks, Sony gets free brownie points simply by dealing from day 1 with the resellers they already have in their network.

Maybe because the 360 sales are a potential embarrassment they'd rather overlook.  I think it was stated the idea was around 1/3 of the systems failed that were made under that generation, despite the large assumed numbers they don't differentiate from someone who got ONE that worked or who got ONE then 3 replacements that eventually finally kept working.  I mean if you (making this up) touted selling 100M units, but then only 60-65M of them were legit buyers, not replacements, you'd look terrible for a multitude of reasons.  That's why I always figured them for just not listing sales but units made.  Nintendo has been the only one (as Sony annoyingly does it too) that will quarterly tell actual sales, not produced.

Are we really using debunked fanboy theories from 2008 in 2010? Most of those "replacements" were free under warranty and the later extended warranty and the amount wasn't anywhere as big as people overblown it to be though still a major issue that was quickly fixed with new pro/elite shipments and the phasing out of the original entry versions of the hardware outside the newer arcades later replaced by 4GB slims.

It's actually likely the Xbox outsold the PS3 or was near tied and not metaphorically I mean you could probably bring it down ti a decimal point. Xbox 360 also sold more the second half of its life than the first so these 2008 excuses don't work.

Just like PS3 only having Motorstorm and C games until 2009, also nonsense.

In Europe Microsoft deals with resellers more with Germany as a home base.

Yes because it's not a myth and not fanboy depending on the number you care to quote.  There are fanboy bs bits about it, such as the myth over 50% of them bombed.  The fairest one I recall that seems to be parroted on the wiki falls in around the 20-25% but back in the day as it was going the SquareTrade warranty replacement group (outside MS) had a 16 1/2% rate or a 1in6 failing range which I would believe given their major issues for years over multiple board revisions, and the soft 3 year warranty extension.  This with some nice bar graphs seems to line up the two figures fairly well from the smaller and larger being not so fantasy.  https://www.theregister.com/2009/09/03/squaretrade_console_failure_report_sept_09/

The failure rate dropped Significantly right before they announced 10 million Xbox 360's sold and continued rapidly dropping from there so between the warranties at the start, the extended warranties and other replacement policies the notion of a significant amount of sales being from RROD not being replaced free, for a console that sold 84 million as of 2014 and probably at 87-88 now, doesn't add up.

So here is where the legendary 54% failure rate comes from:

https://www.gamespot.com/articles/xbox-360-failure-rate-542/1100-6215590/

Yep, a survey of 5000 humans done by someone other than Microsoft. In other words, sample size too small to be relevant + not official data from Microsoft. Maybe, if someone cares enough to get something closer to the real failure rate (the exact number is likely unknown because not all failures got reported, I imagine), they can sneak inside Microsoft HQ using a cardboard box because age hasn't slowed them down one bit, retrieve the data, and leak it to the world.

This is most likely illegal and I don't condone illegal stuff, so in case you get caught because age HAS slowed you down, don't tell them that it was my idea because it wasn't.

How can something that hasn't been released impress me?
At this point it's all marketing.

I agree with this.

It always seems to take awhile for devs to take advantage of the "new thing", and show off what it can do.  For example, on the X360, it wasn't until Gears of War came out that I was like "wow - this is why I bought this system".  For the PS4, it was Horizon:Zero Dawn.

That being said, Microsoft buying Zenimax (Bethesda, ID, etc) for over 7 Billion bucks is impressive.
