Anyone have any sales numbers/revenue for Japanese TG16(non-CD) and SG-1000 Game software?

Recommended Posts

I'm currently working on a video game history book and I am trying to fill a gap relating to the Japanese side of the industry.

I wanted to give an idea for software sales for the SG-1000/MKII and the PC Engine known as the TG16 overseas.

Generally, all I can find in relation to the PC engine are sales for the CD games, with the japanese version of "keith courage" being an exception. I have plenty of data that the PC Engine was big news for a time in Japan and that game sales were good, so the fact I can't seem to find data on non-cd HUcard sales puzzles me. I can't even find them on japanese sales tracking firms as even those only have CD games and only a handful of them too boot.

Then there is the SG-1000 the original Famicom competitor, I have gotten information ont he mark3/SMS although there still work being done on that, but I can't find software sales for the SG-1000 anywhere just some PR statements by Sega. I can't really find any hardware sales either.

Supposedly Wonderboy I and II did well but I can't find anything that shows how the software performed with Japanese gamers. I know that the SG-1000 sold more zero pieces of software so this is all very strange, especially for a nation that wasn't as hardheaded as the US for releasing sales figures.

(Also original Mega Man (1-6) sales for the NES/Famicom are something I'm trying to find as well if anyone can help, can find pretty much nearly every other software title but those.)

If anyone can help with this I greatly appreciate it.

Wish I could help as it would be interesting information to know.

In my own searches only the really big hitter hucards tend to have numbers available, usually when they had a big advertising campaign in Japan. That might be another place to start to see if figures are available for the bigger ones. They sold a good few million consoles, so I imagine some games went into 6 figures... You'd hope.

We never got any games officially released here in the UK (blazing lasers as a pack in game technically is the only one) but the import scene was big, and often related to Japanese games just as much as English translations from the states. For the UK the pc engine / turbografx scene was probably similar sized to the snk import scene, it was well established and console sales and parts/repair were commonly available. Japanese consoles were more sought after than American ones as they'd need power converters and different tvs anyway.

This doesn't help in the slightest but it does show that enough was produced in Japan that a significant number found its way to Europe. I think some of the other countries (usuals, Spain, France, Italy and Germany) had pc engine interests as well.

I think topics elsewhere cover this part of the pc engine history outside of Japan, I downloaded an old import catalogue at some point so those are still available for viewing 30 years later.

That's what I thought but I can't seem to find numebers even for the games with decent press, I I find numbers it's for CD games and even then I don't think those are complete. and only a select handful of titles.

Same with the SG-1000 nothing.

I can't even find Mega Man sales in Japan for the NES either. (or NA outside MM2)
