Joystick to usb conversion. . . . . . .

The cheapest solution is the Retro-bits adapter cable if you can find them.  I don't think they are produced anymore, but StoneAge Gamer may still have them.  It only works on CX-40 type joysticks and wont work on paddle controllers.  If you want it for CX-30 paddles, I'd suggest the excellent 2600-Daptor II which does pretty much every Atari controller.

Another possibility here:

I have one, and it just works.

I can vouch for this one too ! Only issue is it's a bit big. Might be an issue if you have really thin notebook. Cable mounted ones are more .. flexible .. ?

Ask Kuba Husak: http://husak.pl/pl/2010/12/atari-c64-amiga-joystick-usb-adapter/

Original language is Polish, so - use google translate. Kuba speak english too.

I have been using this one (the direct link is https://stepstick.pl) and I am very happy with the product and the service. Top quality!

I'll second (3rd, 4th - whatever) the nod to the 2600-Daptor.  I have a pair, they are fantastic.  Makes the emulation experience so much more authentic when using the original controllers.
