Rewiring NES controllers for the 2600/7800

Recommended Posts

I worked on this over the weekend. I followed the instructions very closely, but with these two minor differences:

  • The controller I used was a model NES-004, not a model NES-004E. They look exactly the same on the outside; they're both the standard rectangular model. The interior layout is the same as well, except that the NES-004 is missing the two resistors in the upper left (R1 & R2).

  • Rather than hacking the cable off of my 7800 controller, I used a Sega Genesis extension cable (all the wires on the inside were color coded the same).

End result? It didn't work. Pressing "right" on the controller registered as "up," and that's it. No other buttons responded. I checked with a multimeter, too; I wasn't even getting signals on the other pins! I'm thinking maybe the wires on the extension cable had the wrong color codes?

Anyone else tried this successfully?

I have done the mod sucessfully using a Sega Genesis controller cable.

Don't trust the wire colors they are different. Use your multimeter and find out which colors really go to the pins.

Bloody hell...I was afraid of that. Oh well...I can rewire it without too much of a hassle, I think.

Thanks!

You thought the wire colors would be the same between different controllers for different consoles from different companies? lol.gif

With many other electronics products, cable color codes are standardized. *shrug*
