Kernal
With the developments of FPGA, why isnt there an atari 8bit fpga based system yet? Comparable to the Zx Spectrum Next. If there is can you point me in that direction?

jamm
The Spectrum Next and other similar projects assume there’s demand for something between classic systems and modern systems. At least on the Atari side, that demand had never materialized - at least not enough to support a commercial product. The number of classic computer enthusiasts is pretty small, and the number of those who are interested in anything other than the classic systems they grew up with is much smaller than that. Combine that fact with the fact that the vast majority of that small group of enthusiasts are only consumers, not producers of software, and you end up with a situation where even if there’s a large enough user base to support creating new hardware, you have a minimal amount of software to take advantage of those new capabilities. Unless I'm mistaken, is this what you are looking for? Or perhaps you really want a completely packaged system.

+gnusto
EclaireXL already mentioned, MiST, MiSTer. The latter two are more general purpose and can do more than one machine, but nevertheless have Atari 8 cores. MiSTer is quite modern and has a plethora of updates, MiST is still updated although a little older design.
