Unofficial/Unauthorized sequel games

Recommended Posts

Pac-Man gets sequels from Midway without Namco knows it.

Any games have sequels without authors' permissions?

According to the internet earthworm jim 3 was a port of the original earhworm jim on the genesis.  So it doesn't sound like a sequel.

Earthworm Jim 3D was an authorized sequel.  Since they used different developers from the first two, the original authors probably weren't consulted.

And Namco knew about ms pacman.  The president of namco himself gave his input on the new graphics.  But the original pacman programmer might not have been consulted.

Super Missile Attack could be considered an unauthorised sequel to Missile Command.  It is a hack of the original.

Taito's Arkanoid a sequel to Atar's Breakout.

Maybe a bit gray area for the rules of the topic, but on the NES there was supposed to be a sequel to Punchout on that system, but the game in development went so far into the garbage heap of bad design Nintendo which had originally been allowing it, cut ties and put a stop.  The company having wasted their time and effort making it, decided to rename it (from Mike Tyson's Intergalactic Power Punch) and the main character (Mark Tyler instead of Mike Tyson) so it was no longer Punchout.  Instead the very forgettable and not great Power Punch II arrived instead (despite being no Power Punch 1.)  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_Punch_II

I know there are a few unofficial Corpse Party games, but Kedwin doesn't care if you make them, and a few of them got tributes in official Corpse Party games. Corpse Party Zero comes to mind as one of these.

Arkanoid expanded on the game concept but otherwise didn't have anything to do with Breakout.

That makes sense since Namco released Ms Pac-Man on Game Boy.

But still, Namco was not aware about Ms Pac-Man until later.

Please read the trivia section at:

https://www.arcade-museum.com/game_detail.php?game_id=8782

Namco was not pleased with jr Pac-Man and it terminated with Midway.

Do the Nintendo CDI games count? I don't think Nintendo would have those games released if they had any say in it.
