TOP OF THE LINE 60 WATT ATARI 5200 VIDEOGAME SYSTEM POWER SUPPLY (ALSO COMPATIBLE WITH THE ARCADIA-2001)

Question: One of my original ATARI 5200 CO18187 power supplies was made in Korea, and has a label on it that says it outputs 9.3 volts DC at 1.95 amps. The other ATARI 5200 CO18187 (also called CX-5200 or DV9319A) power supply that was made in Taiwan, has a label on it that says it outputs 11.5 volts DC at 1.95 amps. Why does this third-party ATARI 5200 compatible power supply that is made in China, have a label on it that says it outputs 12 volts DC at 5 amps?

 

Answer: The original ATARI 5200 power supplies used lower quality and lower price unregulated DC power supply designs with incorrect voltage levels placed on the ATARI 5200 power supply labels. These incorrect voltage levels printed on the unregulated ATARI 5200 power supplies might have been done by mistake or on purpose (Perhaps for marketing reasons so that no one attempts to use a third-party power supply on an ATARI 5200 videogame system). I have measured the no load voltage and full load voltage on at least 4 different official ATARI 5200 CO18187 unregulated videogame system power supplies. For example, on the official Atari 5200 CO18187 power supply that is made in Korea, that ATARI 5200 power supply label claims it outputs 9.3 volts DC. However, on the official 9.3 volt DC ATARI 5200 CO18187 power supply the actual no-load voltage is really around 14.97 volts DC and when measured under a load the voltage measured around 12.64 volts DC (Similar results occur with all unregulated ATARI 5200 CO18187 power supplies, including the ones with a 11.5 volt DC label). What this means is that the ATARI 5200 videogame system when under a load requires a 12 volt DC power supply with a minimum of 1.95 amps output. This high-end made in China third-party power supply for the ATARI 5200 outputs a regulated 12 volts DC at up to 5 amps (Will normally output 1.95 amps but the extra amps might be required for future hardware accessories like graphics cards or other items that might plug into the expansion port). For example, with this high-end third party 60 watt ATARI 5200 regulated power supply the no load voltage measures around 12.33 volts DC and when measured with a load the voltage measured around 12.09 volts DC. Also, this power supply has excellent short circuit protection and uses some of the best electronic components in the industry. 

 

Question: What is the best power supply to use with the ATARI 5200 videogame system and Emersion Arcadia- 2001?

 

Answer: The high-quality top of the line power supply made in China called the Chanzon which is 60 watts 12 volts with 5 amps is the best power supply for use with the ATARI 5200 videogame system. This Atari 5200 compatible power supply can be purchased from Amazon directly for around $14.99 to $15.99 with free shipping (prices can change daily). Yes there are some 3 prong 12 volt 5 amp power supplies that cost around $25-$35+ that will also work with the ATARI 5200 videogame system. However 3 prong power supplies are not compatible with the Emersion Arcadia-2001, only two prong power supplies. One of the main advantages of the Chanzon power supply is the over 20+ worldwide safety certifications including the required energy efficiency level VI. Also the Chanzon power supply uses a self-adapting DC port, it automatically adjusts to both 2.1mm and 2.5mm Power Inlets perfectly. The ATARI 5200 requires a 5.5mm outside x 2.5mm inside plug. The ATARI 5200 power supplies made in Korea appear to be lower quality when compared to the ATARI power supplies made in Taiwan, plus the stated label voltage on the ATARI power supplies made in Korea is way off from actual voltage (but the advantage of the Korea made power supplies is that they have screws on the bottom to open and close the power supply). I had one brand new in the box ATARI 5200 power supply that was made in Korea, and the power supply went dead after 1 hour. This can be expected to happen to any brand new ATARI 5200 power supplies that have been sitting in the box for around 38 years.

ATARI CO18187 (DV9319A) (claimed output voltage is 11.5 volts DC, which is wrong): Real world no load voltage 14.70 volts DC, Voltage measured when ATARI 5200 off and connected to the 4 port TV game switch was 13.86 volts DC, voltage when ATARI 5200 4 port videogame system is under a full load measures 12.10 volts DC.

ATARI CO18187 (CX-5200) (claimed output voltage is 11.5 volts DC, which is wrong): Real world no load voltage 14.25 volts DC, Voltage measured when ATARI 5200 off and connected to the 4 port TV game switch was 13.56 volts DC, voltage when ATARI 5200 4 port videogame system is under a full load measures 11.97 volts DC.

ATARI CO18187  (claimed output voltage is 9.3 volts DC, which is a big error on label): Real world no load voltage 14.97 volts DC, Voltage measured when ATARI 5200 off and connected to the 4 port TV game switch was 14.14 volts DC, voltage when ATARI 5200 4 port videogame system is under a full load measures 12.57 volts DC.

ATARI 5200 compatible Chanzon power supply (claimed output voltage 12 volts DC):  Real world no load voltage 12.33 volts DC, Voltage measured when ATARI 5200 off and connected to the 4 port TV game switch was 12.32 volts DC, voltage when ATARI 5200 4 port videogame system is under a full load measures 12.07 volts DC.

 

Detailed voltage test results while using an ATARI 5200 2 Port videogame system

 

ATARI CO18187 (DV9319A) (claimed output voltage is 11.5 volts DC, which is wrong): Real world no load voltage 14.70 volts DC, Voltage measured when ATARI 5200 off and connected to the 2 port motherboard was 13.81 volts DC, voltage when ATARI 5200 2 port videogame system is under a full load measures 12.22 volts DC.

The above post shows one what the ATARI 5200 power supply looks like when ordering directly from Amazon (plain black power supply with no label). However if one prefers a custom label, then when ordering from a EBAY or Amazon dealer here is what the label looks like on the power supply.

Yes that power adapter you posted for $2.39 that is made in China should work on the Atari 5200 videogame system. However that power adapter that is being imported directly from China is in violation of United States law since it does not have the required FCC certification and Energy Efficiency level VI rating from the Department of Energy. Also that adapter is not UL listed, but UL listed is not required and is a optional certification in the United States.

There are Desktop power adapters that cost $25-$35+. The high-end 60 watt 12 volt DC and 5 amp Chanzon for around $14.99 to $15.99 from Amazon with free shipping is a perfect power supply to use with the ATARI 5200 and Emersion Arcadia-2001.

I am sure if one were to look hard enough they could find a adapter that works for under $10 with the ATARI 5200 that is also FCC and level VI, but then they would lose the perfect auto fit technology that allows the adapter to also work with the Arcadia-2001. Plus getting over 20+ worldwide safety certifications should be worth the extra $5.

There are high-end top of the line power adapters that come off the Chinese automated robotic assemble lines, however there are also low quality products that are made in China without all or most the safety certifications. The original post has a high-end power adapter that is made in China and with 20+ worldwide safety certifications, which makes the adapter legal to use and sale anywhere in the world. That is another advantage of the Chanzon company.

To be fair, his CV power supply solution is really nice and currently my main PSU for the CV. The one advantage of this 5200 supply he is listing and all of them actually, are that they are switching supplies so quite efficient in their energy use. Also, they don't take up too much space on a outlet strip since they only use a standard 2-prong lamp type cord on the end that plugs into the outlet itself. That is quite an advantage. But for the normal user, the one that @Shawn posted above is also pretty touch to beat for that price.

 

Also, while he didn't state it, you can use a 5200 PSU to power an Intellivision 2 console as well. Yes...that console originally uses an AC adapter, but like the NES, it has internal rectification of that AC to drop it back to DC anyway, so you can safely use either an AC or DC adapter in that console. Been using a 5200 PSU with my Intelly 2 for testing for well over a decade without issues.

 

So while the amperage on this bad boy that HTDV1080 is listing is way overkill, it is nice it can produce that much current if needed.

Why scoff at somebody who's a 5200 fan? I'm not for doing that, no matter what- even if their content has 100 extra explanatory words that might not have been necessary.
