no overlays vs overlays vs uv overlays

i got my vectrex not too long ago and it didn't come with any overlays.

i really dig the monochromatic glowing but as i don't know what the experience would be, since it's my first vectrex, i don't know what i'm missing out on.

so, does it make much of a difference to you, when you use an overlay?

im not so interested in the authenticity factor of using the right overlay for a game, so the uv overlay looks pretty cool to me

i could also imagine buying a circle and horizon overlay from here to be able to use it for different games

I suppose you don't need them but I don't like playing without them.  They provide colors, yes, but for me it's also about the faux arcade cabinet vibe.  The Vectrex is already shaped like a tiny stand-up arcade cab but the overlay provides a version of the arcade experience as well, the artwork on the edges of the arcade game screens like back in the day.  Some stuff is "important", like the colors for the Star Castle rotating shields but the overlays don't provide anything critical.  Why wouldn't you want something unique, though, that makes the games cooler?

With all the cool options out now, I can't play without an overlay.. It's a must have, for me anyway. For the ultimate Vectrex overlay experience, I also highly recommend getting the UV Overlay Frame from James @ Clockwork Robot and the companion Blacklighter UV Overlays by Laurence. Have fun!

Which frame do you have?

I'd prefer the 5v self powered option, but wondering if you need the extra LEDs?

The overlays are fantastic, but like everything Vectrex getting a few of them and a UV frame is not cheap!

I have a 12v version myself, but I also drive a backlit mini arcade marquee off of it. emoji41.png

Do you happen to get a dimmer for yours? The guy who makes them recommends it.

Anyone happen to know an option that ships to Canada/USA for the AC Adapter required and a dimmer? "External 12V power supply with a 5.5 mm x 2.1mm connector, centre positive (not included)."

This one is supposed to work, but I have no idea about these things and they don't ship to me. I know nothing of these things, unfortunately.

^^^^ Very nice, I dig the marquee.  I have just recently aquired a 12v UV frame and a couple of  UV overlays. 20201001_134540.thumb.jpg.3367bebe2de0fe87c214d9ba0ea4f744.jpg20201001_190135.thumb.jpg.6247c0a599d7f974a42defb532734b36.jpg

This is so bad ass!  I had no idea that this was out there.

I think Star Castle MUST be played with the overlay but other than reasons already stated here (authenticity, etc.) the overlays are not necessary.

I think, overlays are not necessary but depending on a game, they may improve the gaming impression a lot. For instance, VecPatrol - playing with an overlay is much more impressive. For me. But... if the ambient light is too bright - it is not. So, there are many factors here.

I had no opportunity to see a UV overlay with my own eyes.
