This might not work for you but with extended hospital stays I try to pretend I'm aboard an advanced species (but similar to us, think Star Trek) giant galactic ship and I'm being held in quarantine/etc while they figure out how to use their new space age medicine on me. I'll watch all the weird "space TV" channels, politely eat the weird/gross "space food" they give me, ask questions how the strange machines work. I don't know, seems dumb now that I'm reading what I type but you're a creative guy, maybe it will help get your mind of stuff/etc...
