BlueSkyRangers.com and store changes

Recommended Posts

We have closed our Shopify store. If happen to have it bookmarked, it will probably be reachable for another week or so, but has no inventory. It DOES have a link to our eBay store, however. As part of this, we have upgraded our eBay presence to an eBay store, which allows filtering of the view of our offerings.

We have replaced the home page at blueskyrangers.com and it has easier links to our history site ( history.blueskyrangers.com ) and our eBay store as well as to Intellivision Entertainment and Artovision, both of which have some Intellivision-related product.

I am still working (sometimes) on moving the old content to the new pages. If there is something in particular that you notice as missing and would like me to prioritize it, please let me know. What is missing is mostly the unreleased stuff, and non-Atari M-Network stuff.

I also welcome any issues you notice elsewhere on the site.

Finally working harder on getting cartridge inventory posted. Listed our white label Intellivision Inc loose carts (some with manuals and overlays) and Mattel loose carts (without manuals or overlays), along with auctions for a loose World Cup Soccer, a loose Thunder Castle and a loose System Changer. Also added some other random stuff in the store.

The auctions: https://www.ebay.com/str/blueskyrangers/Auctions/_i.html?_storecat=35095264012&_sop=10&listingOnly=1

Hi! Yesterday I bought 4 separate items (all of them carts,) but at checkout I sent an invoice request for combined shipping. That request is still pending, but today eBay is auto-warning me to pay to avoid an unpaid item claim. If you can't do combined shipping, please let me know. Thank you.

Emily was out yesterday. She should take care of it today, I hope. We cannot control how eBay reacts.

Hi, @BSRSteve,

A bit trivial, but browsing the BSR History site, I noticed that the page for the "Motocross" game, has a typo in the page title "Motorcroos."

And one more thing ... one of these must be wrong:

  • The BSR History site claims that Mattel was imposed a monthly fine by the FTC:
    • Keyboard Component"Finally, in mid-1982, the FTC ordered Mattel to pay a monthly fine (said to be $10,000) until the Keyboard was in wide distribution."
    • ECS"Satisfied, the FTC dropped the monthly fine."

  • Wikipedia claims that it was a daily fine:
    • ECS"The FTC was not impressed and finally, in mid-1982, imposed a fine of $10,000 per day until the promised computer upgrade was in full retail distribution."

The strange thing is that, in another mention further on, Wikipedia cites the IntellivisionLives.com article for the FTC fine information (quoted from May, 2006), and the old reference in Archive.org says "monthly fine."

Even stranger still:  In the "talk" page on Wikipedia, someone says that the IntellivisionLives.com source article claims it was per day and that the Wikipedia article needed to be corrected to match:

Quote

The Intellivision article says that the FTC fined Mattel $10,000 per day, but this article says it was $10,000 per month.

also, the Intellivision article says the Keyboard Component actually did get a limited release via mail order before it was replaced by the ECS, but this one claims it was cancelled entirely. so. yeah.
The fine was $10,000/day (although it was paid on a monthly basis), and the Keyboard Component did get a limited release in an (obviously unsuccessful) attept to placate the FTC by claiming the unit was still being "test-marketed". I have rewritten the entire article to better explain these issues and the history behind them. (--The MCP) —Preceding unsigned comment added by The mcp (talkcontribs) 16:53, 8 October 2007 (UTC)

There seems to be something lost in translation here.  If the assertion in Wikipedia is correct, then it means that the fine was $10,000 per day, but paid monthly; and not $10,000 monthly.  This is credited to someone calling themselves "The MCP."

Soooo ... Is The MCP correct?  Personally, if the amount is in doubt, then stating a monthly fine should be sufficient, since even per-day fines are paid monthly.

And as long as you are fixing typos ...

Actually, quite a few pages have "teh" in place of "the."

By the way, @BSRSteve, please let me know if you are actively maintaining these pages and are interested in the typos.  On a bout of nostalgia, I've been browsing the history site lately and noticing quite a few little niggles like the one above.

If you wish, I could just collect all I find and send them to you later.  Otherwise, I just won't bother you with it. :)

I am interested. Collecting a bunch and sending them all at once is probably more effective.

Hi, @BSRSteve,

I finished my stroll down the memory lane in your history page.  Ah, such great memories reading the catalogue descriptions and the original published artwork.

Attached find a list of the errors I found in various pages.  This covers the "Mattel" section.  The pages for games from other publishers I may go through at some later time.

By the way, I must add a personal note here.  I feel rather stupid about it, but reading through the pages it suddenly dawned on me that you are the Stephen Roney that wrote B-17 Bomber!

I seriously had no idea, and for some silly reason never connected the names before. ?

B-17 Bomber is one of my all-time favorite Intellivision games, probably my very favorite -- a classic!  I have countless childhood memories of playing that game with my Father.  He is a history buff, and when we played he tended to get really into it, calling out target names and cities, talking trash to the enemies, and even trying to play-act actual historical bomb runs.  We had a ball playing Intellivision together, and it was almost always B-17 Bomber.

When the Intellivision Flashback came out a few years ago, I sent him one for Christmas and the next day he called me to thank me, and to ask me if it included B-17 Bomber and where could he get the overlays and the manual?

So, thanks for the great game and for the wonderful memories, Mr. Roney. ?

Well, I wouldn't say that I WROTE B-17 Bomber. The game was mostly John Sohl's design. Bill Fisher and I joined B-17 after we finished Space Spartans, but I do appreciate that you liked it.

I am most of the way through your changes and have noticed a few more while I was in the neighborhood. The "Hi and Lo skill levels" on Checkers is a direct quote from the referenced catalog, so I will not be changing that. Same for the spelling of Solar Sailor and the capitalization of Earth in Star Strike.  Corrections are uploaded. Have a couple formatting things to fix now.

Well, a tip o' the hat to all three of you for working on such a seminal and phenomenal title.

I thought as much, but I was too lazy to look them up to confirm.  No worries. :)

@BSRSteve,

By the way, just a quick heads-up because I came across it by chance, the following page, is missing the image:

https://history.blueskyrangers.com/hardware/intellivision4.html

The images from the old site are really too small these days, but I found the original for the Intellivision IV page and added it, as well as some imagery for Intellivsion III.
