CB Wilson early 80s documentation thread

Recommended Posts

@Ksarul and I have purchased an 18Kg lot of documents from CB Wilson’s estate.  Most of this is likely related to the ALC (CC-40), Hexbus, and other early development notes.  I won’t know the depth of what’s in it until it comes in next week, but it’s all of CB’s documentation from what I understand.  It might even have /4A and /4 materials in it.

I’ll start sorting it to start scanning it in as soon as I receive it.   The content will be put into this thread (to keep it in one place), and also put on Whtech for everyone.

Ksarul and I would like to thank Brian G for allowing us to purchase this entire lot to preserve.  We spent quite a bit of money on it (almost $1600 between us), but believe this is worth it.  It will tell the story of the earlier days at TI, why things happened the way they did with the CC-40, Wafertape, Hexbus, and more.  (We won’t say no to donations from the community to help defray the cost.)

Here is a sneak preview thanks to Brian. It’s just a sample.

I’m humbled to be able to preserve this, just as I was with the Gram Kracker materials.

The box of docs is here.  Yeah.  Be prepared to be blown away.

I had to order an 11x17 large format document scanner, a file cabinet, and folders to start parsing through this.  Here’s some pictures/previews of tidbits you guys might like....  how about a 99/3B?

@Ksaruland I now have about $2000 invested in this, so if you’d like to donate to the cause, please feel feee to PM us.

@acadiel I just sent some money to support this preservation effort.

Thanks!!

I’m splitting this with Jim too as it comes in.

I have the file folders, file cabinet and large format scanner now - I’m just waiting on the scanner table and then I will get started.

I’ve done a rough sort.  This is what I have so far in the file cabinet.  I also have the following in binders:

- TI-88 development Notes

- Several Printouts of Wafertape DSR source code (2.5MHz and 3.58MHz - there is a third copy too in the development folder)

- The TI-99/4 Morse Code Interface Box, TI Bug and GROM testing hardware schematics

- A 1981 study commissioned to determine the market for an ALC (advanced language calculator)

- CB’s notes binder

Here's a test scan of the first (that I can tell) "Home Computer" schematic.  May 1978, uses the TMS9985.

Please download it and give me feedback on how readable it is, etc.  (It's an 11x17 scan, so it's ginormous.)

Edit:  Tried attaching a PDF/A formatted one as well.  Let me know what works in what and what doesn't work.

Downloaded and opened fine in Acrobat XI and Reader DC.  PDF/A format is good and will prevent modifications.  Quality is excellent.

I got a decent scanner and am scanning at 1200DPI.  It’s doing an amazing job.

Hoping that EVERYTHING - even the trip reports and memos are posted when all is said and done. As a services and R&D manager myself today for an aerospace tech company, I find this stuff just totally fascinating.

I'll scan everything that I have.  It'll all go up here first, and then I need someone's help with renaming it all, sorting it, and uploading it properly to WHTech into the right spots.  Also, now that we have people taking my "whitened - deskewed scans" and applying OCR, we need to figure out which ones of these should be chosen as well.

While I appreciate everyone helping out with the OCR - and it's good that a few people have done so - let's coordinate who's doing OCR and figure that out so we don't have a lot of different things to worry about choosing from.  Maybe an "OCR" thread to separate it all.
