FORCE firmware update

Recommended Posts

I think it would be a good/useful addition to have

a) a forced, unconditional firmware update

b) PlusStore only supporting a minimum version #

The thinking is, if this will allow mandatory bugfixes to be distributed, and prevent copies of old firmware being used on "unapproved" PlusCarts.

It would work simply by the cart, on boot, detecting a forced update and automatically applying it.

a forced, unconditional firmware update needs firmware changes and thus it will only work with future firmware version.

Every major PlusCart firmware version has its own route in the PlusStore API. Currently all routes deliver the firmware update option as an optional menu entry and all the content entries like:

  • Public ROMs
  • My ROMs
  • My Recent ROMs
  • Popular ROMs
  • Search ROM

I planned to deactivate the content entries in older (deprecated) API routes, so the user of an old firmware version would only have the firmware update option and the "Setup" menu at startup.

btw.

currently the oldest firmware version in the device database is "v0.10.1" here is the device statistic from the DB:

Firmware version devices
v0.16.0 7
v0.15.14 1
v0.15.6 6
v0.15.5 1
v0.15.4 1
v0.15.0 40
v0.14.20 1
v0.14.15 3
v0.14.10 6
v0.14.6 5
v0.14.4 2
v0.14.1 1
v0.13.4 2
v0.12.0 2
v0.11.14 1
v0.11.0 1
v0.10.2 1
v0.10.1 1

With the new v0.16.0 release I deactivated the content entries for PlusCarts with firmware versions pre v0.13.0. Only the "** Update **" function is available from the PlusStore for these PlusCarts.

here is the current device statistic from the DB:

Firmware version devices
v0.16.0 21
v0.15.6 2
v0.15.4 1
v0.15.0 33
v0.14.20 1
v0.14.15 4
v0.14.10 6
v0.14.6 5
v0.14.4 2
v0.13.4 2
v0.12.0 2
v0.11.14 1
v0.11.0 1
v0.10.2 1
v0.10.1 1

Wow 83 carts in use. I know that some have more than one, but thats still quite a few carts in use. Very cool!

I have only sent 45 Carts and DIY Kits, and maybe 5 of them are not yet online.

H.E.R.O. is one of my favorites too. Maybe one day we can build levels online, and play them on the VCS

X2! Loads of fun competing with you in the Pacman games! :)

I hope you enjoy the expanded Maze in the latest KC OS 12 prerelease, I'll be sharing it soon on the exclusives thread!

Wow almost half of the PlusCarts on the network are hacked then! I was talking with @grey/msb about the possibility these hackers might release OS 12 early, we pushed the SillyVenture 2020 party back until June 2021 so it would be kind of cool actually if they did ;)

During the beta phase I try to keep track about the PlusCarts and where they come from. For most of the PlusCarts I know which beta tester or AtariAge user they originate. But there are currently 8 PlusCarts connecting from 3 different locations that I don't know the User/Creator.

In the future I don't want to identify every single PlusCart, but I would like to use a free IP-Country geo-location DB like:

https://ipinfodb.com/free-database

to make a public statistic about the usage from different countries.

Would be nice to see just how 'Global' a group we are/will become.?

I've got a another pluscart which has never been online.  It's a Christmas gift for my cousin.

I think you should update the firmware and then "disconnect" just before Christmas.

So your cousin has the new keyboard/lowercase and all that.

3 Canadians and two of them are me! ? Considering the US has 10x the population of Canada that's not too bad for representation so far.
