Playstation: What might be the problem?

Recommended Posts

I have an original playstation that is now no longer working...I get the audio screen and that's it. I tried cleaning the lens and regreasing the gears....but still no go. Any suggestions, aside from buy a new one? Do they sell the lens portion seperate...how can I be sure it isn't a problem with the main board. The cd will spin and then stop, spin and then stop.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

What he said is true, that is an old developer trick that was used in the QA departments after systems started getting old.

some of the games were fun and worth sitting a system upside down for... plus it looked ridiculous when youd go to someones place and theyd be deep into a game and you realized the ps was sitting upside down spinning away :D

I had a few that would only work upside down but damn I had so much fun with some games, I never cared. At least the on/off button was accessable, unlike the ps2 :)

Ugh, that is the problem child in the PS family, the power supply is too close to the laser assembly and I am almost 100% certain that by now it's fried. I'll take a look and see if I have an extra laser assembly. :|

Have a look at the laser and if it is at a slight angle and not aligned then it meens it is worn. Now this happened to my original model so i took apart the laser and added a strip of metal off a floppy drive and all works well. Heres a good guide http://www.cyber-mag.com/station/laser.html

You can try adjusting the power as suggested, this is easier. It may work or may only work for a while.

You don't HAVE to turn the PS2 off ya know, hold the reset button for 2 seconds and it goes into standby mode. I don't think I've actually turned my ps2 OFF since I bought it :)

Hey, it sounds tons better than what I have to go through to play an NES game.

I have that same model (#1001) and have experienced skipping problems (it hasn't malfunctioned like the original poster's psx though). I did the POT tweak and it made a big difference. I recommend you do it, but as the page at psxtune says, be very careful when adjusting the pot as it only requires a small adjustment.
