7800Knight
I am interested in getting an Atari XE light gun for my Atari 7800 for games such as Crossbow and Barnyard Blaster. There is a problem though - these light guns are hard to find and the few I see on Ebay cost a small fortune. This leads me to two questions: 1. Is there a third party alternative out there to the Atari XE light gun? 2. Can another light gun (such as the NES Zapper) be rigged/modified somehow to work with an Atari 7800/2600/XE? Any input is appreciated.
Bratwurst
The light gun for the Sega Master System can be adapted fairly easily to the Atari format: https://133fsb.wordpress.com/2010/05/08/sega-light-phaser-to-atari-xg-1-adapter/
CPUWIZ
I know some people don't, but I like the one from Best.
7800Knight
One from Best? May I ask you to extrapolate?
CPUWIZ
Best Electronics sells their own lightgun, google for it. Be prepared for bleeding eyes, when you find their website.
+sramirez2008
The Best Electronics light gun is the one on the right hand side.
Shawn
I find a modded Sega Master System Phaser to be the winner of all the different flavors.
7800Knight
Thanks for mentioning the Best Electronics site. I found it and plan to send away for their catalog first thing tomorrow morning - I'll need a postal money order per their website.
gilsaluki
I have all versions of light guns. Sega, Atari, and Best. I don't find (at least on my CRT TV setup) them to be any more accurate (or less accurate) than from each other. They all are pretty poor. I find I have to be about 12 inches or closer for them to hit their target. That being said, I love the light gun games.
gambler172
Best lightgun is great.

No, Brad will take PayPal, just email him as per instructions or else your email will end up in the ether.

I just placed an order and he said he switched from PayPal to G Pay because PayPal has become understaffed with poor support. I suppose he might use it if you twist his arm. AtariBrian
Brad told me he is no longer accepting paypal but you can use G pay or credit card.
CPUWIZ
Cool, I don't blame him. Just mentioning it, last 4 orders I got, I paid with PayPal and I don't even have PayPal, he sent me an invoice.
gilsaluki
Recently got ripped off by PayPal. So, yeah. They can go eat SH)t!
Geoff Oltmans
I've used the transistor inverter circuit with a Sega Light Phaser but I have to say I haven't had very good luck with it. I don't know if it's a result of connecting my 7800 through a VCR to demodulate it to composite out on a monitor, but it seems like it's slow to register a trigger event. pony
Not changing the subject but does anyone know if just the cable is available for the original XE lightgun? Mine works if I bend it sharply where it goes into the gun. I figure a wire is broken going in.

You can buy DB9 joystick cable extensions fairly cheaply on eBay, elsewhere. Cut the end off of the end you don't need and wire the new cable into the gun. CPUWIZ
Make sure they are not ones that do not carry 5V! Sega ones work for sure.
Shawn
Ya, be sure it has all the lines wired as needed. Cheap ass ones only have 5 6 of the 9 wires that the joystick used. You need other connections on the DB9 to wire the lightgun properly.
