Goochman #1 Posted November 10, 2020 Im trying to play Ultima II on Altirra and the keyboard mapping makes this difficult. Ive tried navigating the windows to see if I could remap the Up and Down arrow keys to something else but cant figure it out. Is there an easy way or writeup to show how to remap a few keys?
Mclaneinc #2 Posted November 10, 2020 You should be able to do it in System / Configure System / Keyboard and then set the layout to custom, from playing with it you would need to setup all the keys as you like. Sadly there's no templates although you can import one if there was etc etc..
Goochman #3 Posted November 10, 2020 So your saying I have to define the complete keyboard from scratch - no way to override a few keys? Is there some .ini file or such with mappings that can be adjusted? Bummer if its this difficult.
Mclaneinc #4 Posted November 11, 2020 (edited) I'm not saying it for sure as I'm not 100% if that is the way to do it, really needs @phaeron to chime in, it looks like its how to do it but does seem a lot of initial work, thankfully once done it can be exported and becomes a template that can be imported needing it all to be done just once. Again, Avery needs to confirm if I'm right or wrong....I only had a few mins to look at it.. Edited November 11, 2020 by Mclaneinc
phaeron #5 Posted November 11, 2020 You don't need to redefine the keyboard from scratch -- there's a Copy Default Layout to Custom Layout button so you can start with either the Natural or Direct layouts.

Thanks phaeron - I saw the copy default but still cant seem to modify the mapping. Could you walk me through how I could map the Up Arrow key to the Atari = key? Once I get 1 key done I can change the rest (actually I just want o modify the Up Arrow to = and Down Arrow to the Atari Symbol key)

Once I get 1 key done I can change the rest (actually I just want o modify the Up Arrow to = and Down Arrow to the Atari Symbol key) After copying one of the default mappings to the custom layout, click Customize to open the keyboard layout editor. Select the desired Atari key on the left, click in the Host Key Binding field, then type the arrow key you want to bind to that Atari key. Click Add, and this will add the binding. Any previous binding to that host arrow key will be highlighted and removed in this process. Once you're done, make sure the "Custom layout" is selected (it should have switched you to this automatically when you initialized the custom layout). Note that if all you want is for the host arrow keys to type +/-/*/=, you don't need a custom layout for this, you can just change the arrow key mode to "map host keys directly" on one of the standard layouts. This also determines what arrow key bindings you get when you copy into the custom layout. Finally, make sure you don't have a joystick bound to the arrow keys on one of the input ports, as this will override any arrow bindings on the keyboard while you have it enabled.
