800XL sound... can I turn it down?

I have this connected to a 1702 monitor and you can use the volume knob but even when the sound is turned down all the way, the volume level is still pretty high... is there a way to turn the volume down more or even mute it?

Sounds like your monitor volume knob is broken. With my 1702 turned down, I can't hear anything.

Damn, I was afraid of that but I can turn the sound up with the knob... doesn't make any sense.

The potentiometer's grounded side could be failing, being at a very high resistance or possibly even open. First thing to check would be the the solder connections to the board looking for a cold solder joint or a cracked trace.

Even just dirt on it so the wiper (think that's the name) makes zero contact on parts of the pot so some parts work other don't (although normally you get crackles or thumps)
