What have you actually PLAYED tracker for 2021 (Season 14)

It was a super big week for gaming around here, mostly because I didn't check in on the forum last week so I had no idea that the week ended early on account of the end of the year; so this week's post includes all my household's playtime from December 28th through yesterday January 10th. I spent the last few days of 2020 first finishing up my play through of the Doom Zero add-on for classic Doom on the Switch, which was an absolutely awesome fan made prequel to DOOM 2016 made in classic Doom.

After Doom Zero was wrapped up I focused my gaming attention on doing a playthrough of Alien: Isolation for the Switch on hard difficulty, which was the one game I was most looking forward to playing through first in the new year. Alien: Isolation is one of those extraordinarily rare games that I could just play over and over again and never get bored of, and this playthrough was no exception. I completed it faster than ever, 20 hours on the dot, and had an absolutely fantastic time playing it. As soon as I finished I was tempted to start a new playthrough on Nightmare difficulty, which I've never tried before, but was quickly distracted by the Christmas present my roommate got for me finally arriving in the mail!

What he got me was an EverDrive GB X7 for my Game Boy / Color so I immediately loaded up a micro SD card with all my Game Boy goodies and dived right into it. First I did a playthrough of Contra: The Alien Wars, which was one of my favorite Game Boy games as a kid, then checked out the Game Boy Color reimagining of Space Invaders; which was actually super cool and had a lot of neat new touches. Since then though I've just been playing Metroid II: Return of Samus, which is just a fantastic classic Game Boy game and looks really nice on the Game Boy Color with the little splashes of color that the GBC adds. As far as the misses' gaming time for the first week of the year, she's just been keeping herself occupied with the Japanese import physical copy of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy that I got her for the Switch for Christmas. I think she's about 80% or so through the first game in the series at this point and is having a lotta fun with with. :)

Well, that about covers everything for this week! Until next time, and as always, best wishes and happy gaming to you and yours! And Happy New Year! ?

My times for the extended week:

NES:
Dragon Warrior III - 9 min.
Ikari Warriors II: Victory Road - 178 min.
Krion Conquest - 220 min.
Magical Doropie - 90 min.
Marvel’s X-Men - 115 min.
Sword Master - 54 min.

Genesis:
Blaster Master 2 - 101 min.

PlayStation:
Block Wars - 8 min.
Brave Prove - 3 min.
Cyber Egg: Battle Champion - 8 min.
DamDam StompLand - 2 min.
Imadoki no Vampire: Bloody Bride - 141 min.
Lucifer Ring - 3 min.
The Smurfs - 2 min.
Snow Racer ’98 - 4 min.
Stahlfeder - 8 min.

Two-Tentaku - 3 min.

Beat X-Men, Magical Doropie, Krion Conquest, and Ikari Warriors II.

BTW Magical Doropie is the Japanese version of Krion Conquest, but Krion has had big cuts and changes made to it, so it's certainly worth counting them separately. I played the fan translation of the former game.

Regarding the question of systems "aging into" the classic gaming tracker, I still like the idea of this as a tracker for 20th-century systems (or more accurately years that begin with 19xx, since 2000 is technically and irritatingly in the 20th century). There really was a sea change in gameplay around 2000, and differentiating between the two is potentially useful.

But ultimately the people who were most vocally against the inclusion of anything newer than 198x haven't even participated for a long, long time, so it doesn't matter too much! :)

Never beat any of the Castlevanias before. So I decided  now was going to be the time to finally do it. Its been over 20 years since I played the first, couldn't keep it off any longer.

Everything else on Colecovision or Intellivision is because it just came in the mail.

NeoGeo to me is like the Ark of the Covenant, chances are you'll never lay hands on it. It adds to the allure. Plus the games are incredible. They have their own distinct style that carries through multiple franchises.

I hated math. I refused to take it. I failed grade 9 math 3 times. I was literally never there.

I still graduated in 4 years. My very last semester before graduation was terrible. Grade 9 math 1st period, grade 10 2nd, lunch, grade 11 4th period.

All the math I tried escaping had found me finally. I had no choice but to sit and learn it. But when faced with the reality of staying back while all my friends graduated, that kicked my ass into high gear.

I didnt want to be the dumb ass. Now  a days I dont understand the hate I had for it. Math was kind of fun when it all clicked.

Yeah, I ended up graduating college in 4 years instead of 3 because of math. Oops. Still, unless you look at my transcripts, it looks like I spent the normal amount of time for a 4 year degree (and it is a 4 year degree, which definitely helps), so no big deal.

NEO GEOOOOOOOOOOOO! Which Neo Geo is it? In the tracker we do Neo Geo AES/MVS for AES and MVS, as they are basically the same system, and Neo Geo CD is its own separate thing. I wasn't sure how to list it for my first time entering Neo Geo games myself, so I asked a few months ago and this is apparently how we do it. In any case, damn I love the Neo Geo!

Here are the games that  I started to play in 2021.

Arcade

Dig Dug                                   -10 Minutes    This is a really fun game that I am starting to enjoy playing. I need to put more time into this to try to get better, and advance further in the game.

NES

Ghosts' n Goblins                    -115 Minutes  . I remember playing this as a kid, and although it is one of the toughest games on the system, I still enjoy playing it as much today as I did back then.  It's not perfect by any means, as for the controls are not the best, but I think at this point in my life I can say that this is my favorite game on the NES.

Kung Fu                                   -20 Minutes      This is a classic NES title in my opinion. I can pick it up anytime and play, and parts of it are still challenging to this day. I like how some of these old school games you can just play for a little while, and you don't have to put in allot of time like some of the modern games today.

Pacman (licensed)                  -10 Minutes I always enjoyed the Pacman series, and although I'm not to good at this game, I really do enjoy this version of the game.

Galaga                                     -20 Minutes This is probably one of my favorite shooters of all time. There is something simplistic yet very challenging about Galaga that makes it very fun to play.

Nightmare on Elm Street        -15 Minutes This is a game that I would like to complete one day, as well as Friday the 13th. The Freddy fights are really challenging, and I think this is one of the better horror games for the NES.

Sega Genesis 32x

Virtua Racing                            -7 Minutes This is a very fun racing game that I remember playing in the Sega Genesis Challenge at Blockbuster Video back in the 90's. I highly recommend  this 3d racing game.

PS1

Metal Gear Solid                      -120 Minutes     I am really enjoying playing this game. I thought that the story line early on was a little better, but maybe it will end with a strong finish. Either way I hope to complete this game soon, and I would recommend playing this game if you get the chance.

N64

Bust-A-Move 99                     -15 Minutes  This is a really fun puzzle game that is like a shooter version of Columns.

Blaster Master on the NES is an excellent game hampered by its lack of a password system: repeatedly replaying early levels, just to get a crack at the difficult later levels and bosses, is simply too much to ask (as is any game that expects a 3-4 hour playthrough on a system as crash-prone as the NES). It's also lousy that you lose weapon power for getting hit, as it's not a mechanic that makes the game more fun, and the later bosses are too cheap to make it justifiable. In almost every other respect, it's great.

Blaster Master 2, sadly, stinks. It looks and plays like a low-tier Amiga game, and the stage design is especially poor -- the kind of thing where you get hit as soon as you enter a room, or where enemies spawn at the edge of the screen and give you no time to react. I'm planning to play through it but don't expect to enjoy it much.

Haven't played the Game Boy game or any other games in the series except the PlayStation entry, which is okay (or seemed that way after an hour or two of play).

That is very interesting to know. I only played the NES version in short spurts, but it always seemed like a different and fun game to play. Yeah I remember a back in the 80's and 90's when the NES would just crash on me in the middle of a game, which was pretty frustrating as a kid.

I didn't know that about Blaster Master 2. Those type of games are quite annoying where you lose a life at the beginning of the stage, and have no progressive build up in difficulty level.

I also wasn't aware there was a PS1 version of the game, I need to try that out. Thanks for that information.

The story devolves into a schizophrenic ramble of irrelevant tangents and spasms of sexist affectations.  I would advise not thinking about the story too much and just enjoy the game.  I played it and tracked my time not too long ago and posted about it.  I will go dig that up when you are done.

Once you play a Picross game all will become apparent . . . . LOL

If you don't use the starting hint then you need to try and guess the best option to play first.  Usually that means making a guess on a row or column with a very high number.  Sometimes there is a row that you know is completely filled in, so that is safe.  From there you have to build out from your correct guesses.  I find that one of the best strategies is to try and work inward from one of the edges.  That's not always possible, but it tends to make the solution go faster.

You're very welcome! The PS1 game is pretty affordable and some people like it quite a bit; I wasn't a huge fan but my first impressions, at least, were that it was somewhat better than I'd expected.

I think you'd enjoy replaying the NES game with savestates. Without them, it's likely to be frustrating and stressful, but with them you can enjoy some of the best music and stage design on the NES. There's also a well-known pause trick that makes several boss fights trivial, though it doesn't work on every boss.

I think your right. I am enjoying playing the game but the story is starting to get a little crazy toward the end. Its nice to know that  you played/tracked the game, and I would like to read your viewpoint on it. I'll let you know when I complete it, which will hopefully be within the next week or two.

That sounds like allot of the Atari 2600 games I have played. There are certain patterns that I look for even in games like Demon Attack, where the enemies perform specific maneuvers and that's when I try to attack them. Hopefully one day I can try out Hunchy 2 as well.

Its funny you say that because save states are one of the main reasons I like using emulators. I think it makes gameplay much more relaxing to be able to go at my own pace, and not to have to repeat some of the more difficult parts over and over again. It's nice to know it has a good soundtrack as well.

That’s what is great about the HSC. You play a game for the HSC and it’s so good you’re still playing the game all the time years later. Happens with me especially with Eggomania.

times for the week are all Atari 2600:

Berzerk 43 for FB HSC

Fast Eddie 36 mins for FB HSC.
Solar Fox 21 mins

all good.

Japanese companies have about 2 weeks off at the end/beginning of the year for the holidays, which is why I had so much stuff on both sides last time, but work has started again.

Mark III/Master System
Sonic the Hedgehog - 13

SG-1000
Choplifter - 6

Genesis/MD
Irena Genesis Metal Fury (demo) - 9

Demo for an interesting shooter that's over on Kickstarter right now. Probably has the best voice samples I've heard on the system. They also seem to have shamelessly borrowed the game's HUD from Gleylancer, which I absolutely approve of.
Sonic 3 & Knuckles - 300

Once as Sonic + Tails, once as Knuckles. Although it's super easy to get 99 lives in one playthrough as Sonic/Tails, it seems that I somehow still have difficulty doing it as Knuckles, sadly; only made it to 89. I did take Knuckles through all of Sonic's paths except for Angel Island Act 2, which requires you to be on second playthrough since you need Super/Hyper Knuckles (and he can't finish Sonic's Act 2 anyway since the camera locks before he can get to the boss), and Carnival Night Act 1, which is just a pain to get Knux into, so I skipped it. I also did that cool Ice Cap Act 1+2 thing that Knux can do. It softlocked the game and I had to hit the reset button, but it worked the second time. Finished Act 2 in less than 1 second!
Xeno Crisis - 14

Saturn
Akumajou Dracula X ~Gekka no Yasoukyoku~ - 170

SFC/SNES
Akumajou Dracula - 19

Wasn't feeling it this time, so I quit only a few stages in.

Neo Geo AES/MVS
Waku Waku 7 - 24

GB
Tobu Tobu Girl Deluxe - 75

I saw this on Kickstarter last summer (or was it 2 years ago? I forget...) and decided to pass on it since it didn't really seem all that interesting. I stumbled upon it again today by chance, remembered it from last year, and found out that the game is actually available for free on its website, so I tried it. After playing it for this long, I ended up buying 2 physical copies of it anyway because what the hell. You can absolutely beat the entire game in about 2 or 3 minutes, but I highly doubt that will happen the first time you play it... Anyway, it's free, so go download it and try it since you might like it. GBC enhanced with excellent color use, Super Game Boy enhanced, nice music, and a top-tier Game Boy game.

Here are my times for the past week (January 11th through 17th) on classic systems...

Arcade:

Mario Bros. - 19 min.

I only played a single game of Mario Bros. this week because I found something else interesting to do... I'm currently working to comment a disassembly of the MSX cartridge Yamaha Playcard System (or Yamaha Playcard Program), trying to find out the format in which the music is stored on the Playcards after being successful with finding out the format in which their PRS-60 keyboard (which I own) saves the music on tape. For the Playcards I haven't had success yet though I did find out some routines and their probable purpose. In Mario Bros. itself, it's the usual fare of about 160.000 points.
