HSC18 - WELCOME AND GAMES LIST

Recommended Posts

We'll start up the new season in a week or so, post and games you'd like to play here, games that need unusual hardware or take a long time to play proably won't win the polls but you can list them if you wish!

Don't be shy it's all fun, nothing too serious, low score club members especially welcome. Same tried and tested format; typically 2 week rounds running Sunday to Sunday with 1 or 2 games.

Any questions just ask or checkout the beginner's guide thread.

I think ABBUC 2020 contest runner-up DiscOPop is a must-have, as it is easy to pick up but very difficult to play well consistently.

I'd also propose to play Shamus+ HSC with - still configurable - special HSC scoring.

I recently played Juno First for the ABBUC national contest and found it quite interesting.

A Ten-Liners round could be fun as well.

I'd rather play less but good games per round than try a dozen that fit thematically. I don't mind playing "strange" games, I just don't like games that feel like archeological work.

I'll update this post if I think of any others...

  1. Round About (Datamost)
  2. Star League Baseball (Gamestar) - not sure how well this could be adapted to HSC play, maybe most runs scored against the "Heat - Sluggers" (most difficult) computer team?
  3. Captain Cosmo (Nexa Corporation)
  4. Chicken (Synapse Software) - would be fun to do a paddle games round: Avalanche (APX), Sneakers (Sirius), Kaboom (Activision), other
  5. Pathfinder (Gebelli Software) - have not played this one myself, has it been played in HSC before? Looks interesting. (Played in HSC 2019)
  6. Busy Baby (Royale Software)
  7. Pondering About Max's (Change In Heat)
  8. Salmon Run (ATX)
  9. Shadow World (Synapse Software)
  10. Whirlinurd (US Gold)

Not a specific game, but a suggestion - I found that I really enjoyed the text adventures we played in season 17. Would be fun to throw some others in as bonus games now and then.

Yes, it was played in the end of September 2019 so somewhat recently.

Something else that was on my mind is that @Caco in September 2020 mentioned that beyond playing new homebrew games from the community, perhaps we could create games on our own. Well, technically TRBB already does since he's got a foot in both communities. Personally I think I know how to program games, but not enough about the Atari to get into it even on a BASIC level.

Thus my suggestion in the beginning of December was that for the next season, we could use a tool like The Arcade Machine by Brøderbund. I know it is limited in which types of games you can make and that it is limited to 5 difficulty levels (unless the engine is hacked?) but perhaps it could be a fun intermission some time around summer. Atarimania has a list of known games made in that tool.

It might be too long for most but I'll propose Journey to the Planets.  Had some fun showing it to my daughter this past summer and I keep going back to it.

I've always loved the exploration part of it as much as the puzzle solving.

Henry's House

Recently I played this game, and I have to say, it is amazingly challenging, and actually lots of fun to play. The graphics are colorful and very friendly. Very nice game indeed!

Same request as every year, games put out by Atari UK

So if we exclude re-releases from Atari USA, English Software, Bug-Byte etc, it leaves us with these 15 titles:

7.5 Black Lamp

6.9 Contagion

6.4 Cygnus X1

6.4 Heartache

7.4 The Lone Raider

5.5 Moonbase

6.3 Nucleus

7.3 Slingshot (Golf!)

6.0 Speed Hawk

4.9 Thunderfox (re-relased later in the USA so it would count)

7.2 Tiger Attack

7.5 Tube Baddies (may never have been published by Atari UK, but many years later)

8.1 Twilight World (played in HSC in October 2017)

6.6 Zone Patrol

6.3 Z-Force (preview)

Super Soccer never got released at all, per what I could find on Atarimania.

Yes, assuming the list of played games is fairly complete all three of The Lone Ranger [S8-R11, S11-R13, S13-R14], Tiger Attack [S9-R16] and Twilight World [S14-R19] have been featured, which still leaves 12 of those unplayed.

I don't know about beating it but I know I got a pretty high score.

The classics will all apear in the polls - there are people out there who will join in when they see them. Playing games again is ok, I'll use my usual discression to make sure there is enough play for 2 weeks for those who are keener. I kept it low key last season and there were few multi game rounds so it makes no difference to participation.

Pole Position

TGACCRR

Whistlers Brother

Nibbler

Blue Max 2001

Gumball

HiJack!

Tank Commander

Beach Head I & II

Beach Landing

Aquatron

Fanda platformers again like Beer Belly Burt, Nuclear Nick, Ollies Follies, Ghost Chaser

...
