Wizards and Warriors, or Ironsword: Wizards and Warriors 2, maybe?

 

Definitely sounds like the Wizards and Warriors character, but I don't think the first game has any scenes in a castle. Never played Ironsword. I think there is also a Wizards & Warriors 3??

Yes, there is a castle in W&W (1). When you begin, you are in a forest level. You decend a tree trunk and the next few levels take place underground in caves. When you get back above ground...there is another forest...and then there is a castle that you have to ascend from the outside...and the next level after that is inside it. IIRC, you can use a pink potion of levetation in the first level to quickly reach the second forest. (stand on the edge of the screen and tap up repeatedly until your knight warps over to the opposite side of the screen).
