Can anyone identify this game?

Hi Carlsson,
It was posted in a thread on the [TheC64 Mini, TheC64 And TheVIC20 Group | Facebook] page...by Łukasz Gniedziński on Jan 13. I posted here to try and help.

When asked, by a contributor to the thread, "Where did the picture come from?", he replied,
"...
While looking for a cover from another game, I came across this game by accident. I followed the link but found out nothing...".

So far, no one has been able to identify the game.

Thanks for your interest,
StephenJ

Ok, sounds like a mystery. I see a number of people on Twitter have tried to help as well, so the search is going on in multiple channels. Someone suggested Faxanadu which is not a bad idea, though it would be a C64-ish version of the NES game. Quo Vadis also isn't a bad guess but it doesn't match.

With so many people searching in different places, it should be possible to identify, in particular if Łukasz would reveal which other game he was looking for when he came across this one, i.e. matching keywords.

Ok. I assume the original resolution must be at least 320 pixels based on the candles and other details, meaning we can eliminate a number of systems. C64 and Atari 8-bit still remain, just like later systems like Atari ST, Amiga etc. In the later case I had a brief look on Lemon Amiga but didn't see anything that would match. The lack of a score display eliminates a lot of games.

Had no idea this would turn out to be such a challenge. Because of that, I think I've become more intrigued than Łukasz. Hopefully your knowledge and resources will solve this mystery. ?

Thanks,
Stephen

All official and unofficial versions of PoP that I'm aware of, have a big player sprite and two floors of action per screen. Other than the colour scheme, I don't think this one matches it to a big degree.

Since the OP on Facebook could not recall what he was looking for or where he found the screenshot, plus that extensive search on some of the most likely systems have drawn blanks (and Google also doesn't know), I think it would be hard to locate but we won't give up!
