figgler #1 Posted August 6, 2003 I'm thinking of taking the plunge with a not-to-expensive homebrew cart from AA and need help deciding which way to go....
Brad2600 #2 Posted August 6, 2003 You mean that you plan to purchase one? Or do you plan to actually make one? If you can, download a emulator and the roms for the games you are interested in. This could help you decide on what you want to purchase if that is the route you are taking.
figgler #3 Posted August 6, 2003 Definitely looking to buy, I need to add one to my collection
Albert #4 Posted August 6, 2003 I know there have been previous threads asking this very same question, so you might want to use the search feature and see if you can find some previous input on this question. I'd look for you right now but I'm about to watch a movie at a friend's house. You can also look through the reviews in the store for additional insight. ..Al
Brad2600 #5 Posted August 6, 2003 Also Albert, as I suggested, he could download roms that are sometimes posted in threads. He'd have to search but it's one way to determine whenever something is desirable or not.

Binaries have been released for most homebrew games and they can all be downloaded from AtariAge. You can also find links to the various emulators here. I suggest using z26 for Windows. ..Al
Brad2600 #7 Posted August 6, 2003 As for homebrews, I'd definitely go for a copy of Elk Attack. Eh well. I saw plenty that I liked. I think Venture II rocks and it makes me realize that I'm so ignorant that I haven't really bothered with Venture. Hmm. Looks like I'll be checking it out later. Sheldon Sims #8 Posted August 6, 2003 I picked up Marble Craze from Atari Age at the Austin Gaming Expo. It is definitely worth checking into.
Miqorz #9 Posted August 6, 2003 I currently own.. Gunfight Adventure Plus and Pac Man Arcade. I can't say enough good things about each of them! I am about to jump in and buy a new one.
Mendon #10 Posted August 6, 2003 One's I really enjoy are: Pac Man Arcade Skeleton + Berzerk Voice Space Treat Deluxe Yah, a couple are hacks, not homebrews, but I highly recommend them all. Mendon
StanJr #11 Posted August 6, 2003 You can NEVER go wrong with Marble Craze (it carries my personal guarantee). But I'd say if you are just starting out, pick up Space Treat (deluxe). Its a great little game, very plug and play, and you can get good at it quick. Its a very solid, well made Homebrew. But yeah, if I were you I'd download an emu and try before you buy (just remember that games on a emu are better on a real system.
Thomas Jentzsch #12 Posted August 6, 2003 You can NEVER go wrong with Marble Craze (it carries my personal guarantee). Nine hours after the question? You are slowing-down Stan! And I wonder why nobody mentioned e.g. Qb and Oystron so far. There are so many great (or very good) homebrews. And many of them have been reviewed by orther people (e.g. http://videogamecritic.net , www.atarinvader.com or right here in the store).
+SpiceWare #13 Posted August 6, 2003 I picked up Bezerk VE, Thrust+ Platinum and SCSIcide while at AGE. All three are cool, but if I had to pick one I'd say Thrust as I find myself playing it the most.
Godzilla #14 Posted August 6, 2003 I think your first should definately be oystron, definately awesome.
+Propane13 #15 Posted August 6, 2003 Hello, I own: Space Treat Marble Craze Pressure Gauge Edtris SoundX Mental Kombat I've played a lot of the others as well; indeed most of them are fun too. All are fun, but my recommendation goes out to Marble Craze. -John K. Harvey
MegaManFan #16 Posted August 6, 2003 If I had to pick JUST ONE, it would be Marble Craze. Top five: Marble Craze, Thrust+ Platinum, Space Treat Deluxe, Oystron, and This Planet Sucks.
StanJr #17 Posted August 6, 2003 Thanks for the AI plug Thomas. Just as soon as you release the FINAL version of Thrust, I PROMISE I will buy it. Seriously, though. Thrust is also an obvious choice, although I hear its very tough.
MegaManFan #18 Posted August 6, 2003 Oh c'mon Stan, you're a gamer. Anybody who's been playing video games as long as you or I have can handle Thrust.
SS #19 Posted August 6, 2003 If I had to pick JUST ONE, it would be Marble Craze. Top five: Marble Craze, Thrust+ Platinum, , Oystron, and This Planet Sucks. If I had to pick just one, it would be Space Treat Deluxe (never could get the hang of Oystron, BTW)
Big Player #20 Posted August 7, 2003 Here are the homebrews I own. Every one is excellent. They all get my endorsement. Marble Craze Thrust + Gunfight SCSIcide Starfire Euchre Space Treat Deluxe I was also going to buy QB at AGE, but someone bought the last one. That's what I get for waiting till the end of the show. No worries, I'll just order it when Climber 5 is finished.

MegaManFan #22 Posted August 7, 2003 Never could get the hang of Oystron, BTW. It's insanely hard, but so beautiful (sound and graphics) I keep being drawn back to it.
