Modern Battle for Atari 2600

Recommended Posts

Modern Battle is a work in progress multiplayer military combat game for Atari 2600. It allows up to 4 people to battle simultaneously with a choice of army, air force and navy units. Units have the ability to move and fire in arbitrary directions. Some units feature a turret that can be rotated independently of the vehicle's body.

NOTE: This is currently a very, very early alpha. It is a barely working shell of a game currently. There are many features to be added, levels to be created, modes to be invented and bugs to be fixed. I have decided on this game to release it early to the community so it can develop in public view. If you have any feedback, please post it in the forum below.

Modern Battle Demo - 2021-02-12

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Use Quadtari to allow 4 player simultaneous play (or Quadtari emulation in Stella or other supported emulator). The joystick and fire button control a tank or helicopter in this demo. Both craft are equipped with missiles and a minigun. In this game you must control both the direction and distance of the shot fired in order to hit the target.
Controls
Fire Missile – Tap fire button (without pressing other directions)
Fire Minigun – Hold fire button.
Move Turret – Hold fire button and use left/right.
Change shot range – Hold fire button and use up/down.
Change speed – Use up/down (while not pressing fire). The speed can be applied forward and in reverse too. The vehicles accelerates and keeps momentum while performing other functions. For tanks, the vehicle direction and speed can be operated independently of the turret.
Rotate vehicle – Use left/right on joystick. (while not pressing fire)
Reset – Sets up game with 2 tanks / 2 helicopters
Select – Sets up game with 4 tanks.
Goals for future development
  • Allow multiple screens, and the possibility of random generated levels.
  • Destructible terrain from missile fire.
  • Battleship sea unit
  • Jet plane air unit
  • Infantry and Howitzer land units.
  • The Infantry will have the ability to hide behind terrain and will be immune to bullet fire while hidden. However, missile fire can destroy their cover and they will be vulnerable thereafter.
  • Guided missiles
  • Single/2 player campaign/mission mode – allowing movement screen to screen in multiple directions.
Known Bugs
~~~~~~~~~~

1. After several players has been destroyed, the destroyed hulls can suddenly move onto other parts of the screen.

2. When one or more players are at the edge of the screen, the screen can roll in some cases.

3. In Tank game mode, some tanks can drive through each other with no collision.

The Modern Battle WIP demo is released. Please see top of forum for download.

Note1, the game at the moment can work without a Quadtari but the controls of two different craft will be ganged together.
Note2: This is currently a very, very early alpha. It is a barely working shell of a game currently. There are many features to be added, levels to be created, modes to be invented and bugs to be fixed. I have decided on this game to release it early to the community so it can develop in public view. If you have any feedback, please post it in the forum below.
