danwinslow #1 Posted February 10, 2021 I have some more drives to check out, but I actually don't have any floppies left. I am assuming osmething like this : https://www.ebay.com/itm/Maxell-MD-2HD-5-1-4-Floppy-Disk-Box-10-New-Old-Stock-5-25-Floppies-Super-RDII/143688667159?_trkparms=aid%3D1110006%26algo%3DHOMESPLICE.SIM%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20201210111314%26meid%3De2219b40daa54a84aabc432d97124547%26pid%3D101195%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D12%26mehot%3Dlo%26sd%3D303875721301%26itm%3D143688667159%26pmt%3D1%26noa%3D0%26pg%3D2047675%26algv%3DSimplAMLv5PairwiseWebWithDarwoV3BBEV2b%26brand%3DMaxell&_trksid=p2047675.c101195.m1851 Would work fine? archeocomp #2 Posted February 10, 2021 Atari drives 1050, XF551 require double density diskettes. Those Maxell are HD high density.
moonlight_mile #3 Posted February 10, 2021 I got some hd disks a while back. They did work but I found the oxide coating on the disk started coming off nearly the 2nd I tried to use them. I don’t know if it was just the pack I got or that is the way the 5.25 hd disks are formulated. There are some dd disks for sale out there just keep looking. TGB1718 #4 Posted February 10, 2021 I think 48 TPI is preferred, but I've managed to format HD Disks before, this is on a US Doubler 1050
manterola #5 Posted February 10, 2021 I did not noticed the HD vs DD before and got some HD for an unmodified XF551. They did work, but when I try to read those floppies with a 1050 I couldn't. Just be patient and you should find DD box of 10 for about $10-$12.
+Nezgar #6 Posted February 10, 2021 Before you spend $2 per disk, you might consider contacting bob1200XL on this forum, he has lots of used+good disks on offer to those interested, probably just for cost of shipping. They may already have random Atari software on them for fun, or just format them for your own stuff.
Omega-TI #7 Posted February 10, 2021 It used to be... But.... ... now days, most of those companies that put software on floppies are out of business, so no longer sell or maintain the software. And if you don't copy the old media, you'll lose the program and/or data to bit rot, mold or some other malady so.. go ahead and ... or you'll regret it later!
