The last console manufactured in the USA was the Jaguar to my knowledge. Maybe it's just this VCS 800 Gamestop edition that is; or maybe someone creating this write up for the gamestop website doesn't know what they are talking about. Atari Gamebox LLC is based out of the US, and they do have a US warehouse from which the consoles are being shipped. It used to be understood that "Made in US" basically referred to everything involved in the product being made in the United States. Then it changed to basically being "assembled" in the United States. Now, it's some percentage of the components being made in the United States, or very minimally assembled. I think everything with the Atari VCS is technically made in China. The best I can figure is that they're upgrading it and re-assembling the components and calling it made in USA. But I don't think that would stand up to any scrutiny. The Jaguar for that matter, if I'm not mistaken was made entirely by IBM. While the chips came from different places, the boards were made in the US, chips were soldered to the boards in the US, the cases were stamped in the US, and everything was assembled and packaged in the US. 3 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

The controller boxes say "Designed in California, Made in China" Doing some more research on the console... seems impossible to find a picture of the bottom of one. Anyway; doesn't matter; probably made in China. Just thought it was interesting that Game Stop would post that on the console when it's clearly likely to be erroneous. Atari in US got all the units already boxed on palettes, so unless they would be doing something different to that, unlikely going to have any alterations in the US. The only thing going for it is that it doesn't currently seem to be using ethnoreligious slave labour / prison labour and seems to be produced by Chinese workers who are actually paid a wage. Sure, this is public info, but I am not going to be the one to spread the exact address, so feel free to get that somewhere else. However, here's a Google Street View pic of it. My - guess - is that this is the office headquarters of Atari Gamebox LLC, which is the core development and related support team behind the VCS. So, I suspect most of the rank and file people working on the VCS are based in the US, although I could totally be wrong. I was going to look up the address and do this very thing a while back, but got distracted by things.
