Fun fact for No Escape, if you shoot all the bricks and don't die and don't know how to play, you can score a whopping 252 points! It's also super fun and not sluggish. Luckily, when you try again and experiment, you figure out what's going on and really dig it. More cool music and graphics from Imagic, and a pretty neat take on both Breakout and shooters. Now off to the manual to see if I missed anything.

So according to the manual for No Escape, the color/bw switch pauses! Sweet.

Just quoting myself, don't worry about it

Also, maybe I'm reading it wrong, but it mentions a 99 point bonus for having every stone loosen a brick and hit a fury in wave 1 & 2. Not sure if that means collectively between the 2 waves or each individual one, but either way, doesn't seem like too much of a bonus for how hard it seems. Guess more testing will see how hard it really is.

Anyway, Star Voyager is pretty cool. Although sometimes I cannot for the life of me find the star portal (getting the hang of the controls I suppose), while other times it's right there. And if you manage to finish a level and die at the same time, you get some crazy overlapping of music. Also, one game, I managed to get 10 kills and finish on the orange screen, which by the calculation in the manual would have me at 80 points for 3 chevrons, but instead it put me at 2. This only happened b/c I missed the portal and had to replay a level, so I'm wondering if that had anything to do with it.

Lasers > Torpedoes, tho I do need to practice with those...

My first entries for these games...

No Escape: 5557

Star Voyager: Captain

I apologize for the poor quality photos (actually captures from a video).  I got a close-up of the score for No Escape, but didn't think to do this for Star Voyager.  Hopefully the photos are good enough to see the score I've posted.  I'm going to adjust the brightness settings on my TV and hope the score shows up better in future photos.  I may also play around with some of the settings on my video camera, although I'm not exactly sure which settings I'd want to change (I'm open to suggestions if this is a problem you know how to solve).  At some point, I'll upload videos to YouTube, but am hoping to improve my score on both games first.

Star Voyager: Admiral

I'll offer a few tips for this one:

  • The first priority is to avoid the enemy fire.  Until the enemy ship fires, don't try to bring it into the range of your weapon.  If it happens to fly into range, then obviously, shoot it down, but don't go out of your way to bring it into range.  Instead, try to keep it toward the edge of the screen or off screen.  After it fires and you know it's going to miss you, focus on shooting it down before it has time to fire again.
  • It seems easiest to dodge enemy fire by pulling up and having its shot end up toward the bottom of the screen.  Dodging left/right is also doable provided the enemy ship isn't too close to the center of the screen when it fires.  I have had less success avoiding enemy fire from the top of the screen by diving.
  • Burning a laser to shoot down enemy fire is undesirable, but it is better than getting hit.  A laser shot costs you 10 energy points, but getting hit costs you 16 points.  If possible, take out the enemy ship and its fire with the same laser shot.
  • When trying to shoot the enemy down, I find that it's sometimes best to just let go of the joystick, and allow it to fly into your sites. This is especially the case if the enemy is below your line of fire (roughly between 4 and 8 o'clock).  If the enemy is in the top half of the screen, you can pull up if it's close to your sites and shoot it down before it has time to fire again.  If it's too far up the screen, it may be better to try to get it to fly off screen to the left or right and get a better shot the next time around.
  • To be on pace to make admiral, you'll need to shoot down 4-6 enemy ships before entering the first star portal and at least 10 enemy ships before entering the second star portal.  I must have reset the game dozens of times when these goals were not met early in the game.

I don't know how to play and I scored a "whopping" 150 points.  I just read the instruction manual and I'm still not sure how to play.
