HSC18 Round 5: DIG DUG

Recommended Posts

64,590 NTSC

I didn't manage to get a chance to play this weekend, but I got a few scores in the 60k region last weekend, I think this was the best of them

I definitely prefer the 83 version I played as a kid, I'm pretty sure the gameplay was a lot easier, enemies are frustratingly difficult the kill/stun in this version. Fun challenge for sure though

I setup my 1200xl yesterday and took the opportunity to play on NTSC for a while, the kill/stun is a little more frustrating than the PAL version.

Maybe the speed increase is making it feel like this, I don't know.

That's a possibility I hadn't considered. I played Pal as a kid, maybe it's the NTSC factor that's the issue, should have got myself a Pal machine, but I found an 800xl for sale in Venezuela a few years ago in such good condition with lots of extras, I couldn't pass it up. Might consider doing a trade at some stage if the offer comes up. I find Boulderdash so hard to play on it too

71,960

Arse, void score missed the deadline.

Last go.  As said before its does get better.... still no Lode Runner though ;-)

Good round as always, still not enough time to play ?

Film now.. looks heavy. The GF needs to watch for her art studies.

See you in the next round.

Update to what I posted above: If Altirra is to trust (I suppose it is accurate, but one never can be sure enough), I found the following:

Dig Dug 1982: Boots OK on Atari 400/800 with 16K RAM or more. With 8K, the graphics are horribly corrupted, flicker badly and the game is unplayable.

Dig Dug 1983: Boots OK on Atari 400/800 with 16K RAM or more. With 8K, it doesn't even get to the title screen.

It means that not even the first version of Dig Dug would run on an original 8K machine, though it would start with corrupted graphics. I don't know if it ever was intended to work. I saw a reference to that the source code to the 1982 version was posted here on AtariAge so unlike the case of Frogger, the sources probably never were lost. Perhaps it was a matter of outsourcing the first version, and Atari only had limited rights to republish it so they just as well begun to reissue the 5200 version for A8, in particular if it was considered more accurate?

Interesting!  Never new there were 2 versions of Dig dug on A8.  I am not sure which one I had as a kid.  Will have to play the other one (have not played either since I was a kid).

I really like knowing the history of things including video games so this is great to learn.
