+Larry
This is mostly a question about 600XL's, but would also apply to XL's that have bad ram. I think that the Ram320 XL did not require the base 64K on a 600XL (since one of its selling points was that it could be set to replace the base 64K). How about for XE's? shoestring
The Antonia 4MB doesn't depend on any ram in the 600XL. Everything needed is on the CPU board itself. I would assume its the same for XEs but I haven't tried.
SS
tf_hh's 576K SRAM memory expansion board also doesn't require the 600XL to already be upgraded to 64K because it provides the base 64K itself. You can use it with either a 600XL or 800XL and can actually remove all of the on board RAM chips from the machine altogether. I am also a big fan of the ANTONIA for the 600XL not only because it does not need the separate 64K upgrade but it is also a completely solderless solution.
+Larry
So I presume that the U1MB does require 64K?
Dinadan67
Yes, for U1MB you need base 64kb RAM.

If you're already ordering an U1MB from Lotharek for your 600XL, you might as well order one of his "SRAM 64kb REVISITED" boards to go along with it. https://lotharek.pl/productdetail.php?id=
