HSC18 Round 6: GALAXIAN

Per the original instructions, the scoring is as follows:

 

Stationary: Drones (blue) 30 pts, Emissaries (violet) 40 pts, Hornets (red) 50 pts, Commanders (yellow) 60 pts

 

In flight: Drones 60 pts, Emissaries 80 pts, Hornets 100 pts

 

In flight: Commander without escorts 150 pts, Commander with one escort 200 pts, Commander with two escorts 300 pts

Blast both escorts, then the Commander 800 pts

 

Extra ship at 5000 pts (as most already have noticed)

 

Besides shooting, your next missile is on the top of your ship so you can destroy an alien by just touching it.

The instructions say to only shoot Hornets when they are escorting a Commander, and shoot Commanders only when they are attacking to get the highest scores.

When a Commander is destroyed while attacking, the Galaxians cease fire for a few seconds, so you can blast escorts and other warriors.

On the early waves, you can escape to the left or right side (but apparently that is not a safe space later on)

 

So yes, I suppose the strategy is to blast the blue and violet in stationary, and save the red and yellow for when they are attacking, trying to get both escorts and then the Commander whenever they attack as a trio.

I noticed last time that Galaxian was played (season 11, round 7 = 2014), it also was around Easter time, though it kicked off Wednesday before Good Friday and closed two weeks before it opened in proper trbb calendar style. :-D It was later corrected to Saturday two weeks after (17 days to sync that round to weekends). In 2014, the other game Galactic Chase was played as well, though I read that it was considered slower (until you reach to level 11) and possibly less attractive, which kind of is opposite to what the comments and ratings on Atarimania suggest.

 

Actually Jeff Minter was tweeting about Atarisoft Galaxian on the C64 yesterday, which made me look up which clones exist on that system. If I have the time in the weekend, I might for fun try various Galaxian games on different platforms, both the original Atari/Atarisoft ones and the notable clones to see which I like the best.

Gave it a try in NTSC emulation. Feels a lot quicker indeed, but did not improve my score.

 

Still wonder what kind of animation techniques are used in the game. Quite a lot of movement and colors.

Feel free to post scores for any missed rounds (anyone) but there will also be a catch-up round (probably round 10) where this can be done. Suggestions welcome for games you might want to play on the games list thread. I've taken the helm and am sticking to classics for now as we seem to be doing quite well with keeping people from disappearing but we will get to some lesser known ones later in the season :)
