HSC18 Round 6: GALAXIAN

Recommended Posts

I didn't play the arcade version very much.  It just never tickled my fancy.  I may have to go fire up my MAME cab and have a few goes.

I'm not a fan of the over-erratic flight paths they make on their dive runs.  I think I'd have as much luck hitting them if I played blindfolded.

Still can't get past round 5.

Some improvement!   22,040

Is that the Atari fuji symbol when you take out some of the enemies?  Cool touch if it is.

You are correct, sir!  http://www.digitpress.com/eastereggs/a48galaxian.htm

Very cool!  Now I know why this version is so good. To put the effort in these small details shows how much they tried to make this game good.

I have not passed the 10th wave or payed enough attention in it to see the pacman yet. Keeping dying there. Really fun though.

I'm starting to think I got a lucky fluke when I set my current PB. Tonight I've been playing for 1.5 hours and was nowhere near clearing those scores again. But that's ok, just like a javelin thrower only needs one good attempt to end up on the podium, it is not the average of all sessions played that counts.

Same here. Keep topping out at 14-15k now.

If I have the time in the weekend, I might for fun try various Galaxian games on different platforms

The out-of-contest challenge started. First we have Atarisoft's Galaxian for the VIC-20. In theory it should be a good comparison to the Atari 8-bit version, right? Apart from the graphics are much worse (some aliens look like birds making love), it also is MUCH easier. After a while though the software sprites are so many that there are noticeable slowdowns on the screen. It gets more frantic after a while, but the fact that I quite easily obtained 30410 pts on this game, when I'm having huge trouble scoring half as much on the A8 HSC version says something.

Then we have Star Battle by noone else than the late Satoru Iwata when he was working for HAL Labs to make games for Commodore. I've never to 100% understood how things worked in Japan, if e.g. Namco would license their titles to anyone asking, or if simply copyrights didn't exist in Nippon so anyone could clone anyone's game and sell it under the same title, which actually happened in this case, as it was sold as Galaxian for the VIC-1001. When Commodore released it internationally and Atari happened to have the home rights, they renamed the game but supposedly they had to remove it from the market. The stories are fuzzy on that matter, the Pac-Man/Jelly Monsters story is far better known and actually Star Battle may have been sold for longer than what one would think.

This game has higher resolution graphics (though the blurry screenshot doesn't give credit to those), but everything moves slower and more jerky. Also a much smaller vertical amount of the screen is used for gameplay, meaning that aliens attack at a much closer proximity. If the Atarisoft Galaxian was much easier than the A8 version, HAL's version is much harder, or at least much more difficult to play. Also it appears that sometimes Commanders without escorts may disappear after they have flown past you once. It may be a bug or that I didn't notice that I killed them. After two rounds of play, I managed a meager 8900 pts.

I'll see if I try some other official or unofficial versions of Galaxian, both for the A8 and some of the other systems I have access to (C64 would come to my mind). At least it was an interesting break from strictly playing for the HSC.
