Sears display kiosk

Recommended Posts

Thanks for sharing this!  I was wondering whether these even existed, though I suspected they did.  From looking at the photo:

  • The top part looks like it was constructed from a similar molded plastic as the Mattel one.
  • There are no sliding glass doors underneath the kiosk.  I'm not sure if the beige drawers are part of the kiosk or if the kiosk just sits on top of it.  Aesthetically, they don't seem to match.  I vote that the kiosk is sitting on top of some random set of drawers.
  • The black instructions and overlay diagrams appear to be in the usual place (under the guy's right arm)
  • There is a spot on the right for the Keyboard Component, where the 2 filler panels are located.
  • There is no Kiosk Multiplexer electronics visible.  All we would see would be a special cartridge with a black ribbon cable coming out.  This photo shows the Baseball cartridge plugged directly into the console.

As for whether any survive today, the answer is maybe.  I think only 2 or 3 Mattel kiosks are known to exist at this time, and only 5 Kiosk Multiplexer electronic boxes are known to exist.  Given their large size, low survivability, and that there likely were fewer Sears kiosks than Mattel kiosks, the odds are slim.

Wow!!  Some serious vintage stuff in that video.  The kid playing the SSVA demo set with (of all games) Donkey Kong, the Atari 800 computer for a whopping $800 on sale, the cashier in the video game section walks away to talk to the customer with the awesome leather sport coat.. and behold.. a whole wall loaded with Mattel/Sears Intellivision, Odessey 2 and some Atari games... and the Vectrex running on the counter.

Thanks for posting.  That brought back some great memories!
