damanloox
Does anybody know what could cause rather ugly vertical "stripes" on my 600XL? See picture here: https://photos.app.goo.gl/E1VTwtXsP2mzadwC6 It's happening on composite, s-video (I did s-video "mod") and also RGB (VBXE)... I tried two monitors already... Any ideas? Sugarland
You get the jailbars in RGB? As far as composite and s-video jailbars, it's the LCD display showing much more detail than would a CRT. However a top quality fully shielded video cable will greatly reduce or eliminate the symptom. This video cable is recommended and may minimize the effect. damanloox
yes, I'm getting these on RGB as well as s-video and composite. s-video cable I have seems to be good quality (xbox360 cable modded with Atari plug).

Sounds like the lotharek cables. They are known to be bad quality, un-shielded, and produce the effect you are seeing. I've never heard of this issue when using RGB however. Is that the 360 cable from Lotharek? It sucks and should be banished from this sector of the galaxy. Save the Atari plug side of the cable if you do throw it out.

damanloox
yep - just reading about these "high quality" cables... But - I'm getting the same thing from VBXE (ie. RGB) which I'd assume should be jailbars free...

Sugarland
What sort of cable are you using for RGB? It should not have jailbars identical to s-video.

I had an 800XL in recently which had jailbars on RGB with CSYNC taken from the bottom of the composite out pin. I switched to pin 15 of CD4050 and the improvement was marked. Switching power supplies - I have noticed - can sometimes have a bearing on the jailbars issue as well. Just some ideas if cable/display/etc come up empty. 2
damanloox
@flashjazzcat thanks, will try that tomorrow. Trying out another PSU was my next step but I'll definitely try changing CSYNC source...

shoestring
The instructions recommend picking up cysnc from pin 15 of the hex buffer. The only issue I had with these instructions was where the signal ends up going to on the DB9, so I had to swap them around ( from pin 8 to pin 7 on the DB9 end, which maps to csync on the 1084S ). If you didn't have the issue before the svideo 2.1 mod then I would look at your grounding. Edited May 12, 2021 by shoestring
damanloox
OK, took sync form CD4050 and RGB picture is crystal clear... So the conclusion is: - use CD4050 as SYNC source - do not use XBOX360 s-video cable for s-video. I'm surprised how bad these cables are (and yes - I should have read the posts about these cables before buying.. two of them) - never cut the leads to required length before _fully_ testing everything (now I have to remake my whole 10 lead cable as I'm "testing" my new "contraption" ie. daughter board for DIN13 socket). Thanks guys.
