+therealbountybob
The Great Outdoors We'll tale a break from regular action and launch into a tournament, play each game or as many as you wish and post scores. I've picked a bunch of reasonable ones, typically 6 out of 10ers, fairly quick plays - I've added some comments (from memory!). Not sure if they all work on NTSC and suggestions welcome for game settings etc. Round now ends on THURSDAY 24th June 6pm UK time Download the games from fandal or atarionline.pl or atarimania Catch-up If anyone missed rounds 1-9 post late scores on the threds like AtariSphinx has done for Qix and I'll sort it all out at the end of this round (future trbb will not like that eh?!) Hover Bovver I'll just nip and borrow McKong's... yes plough through the flower beds and see how you get on. Tricky at first but great fun so bear with it. Keep stick held and wait for momentum to build, use the hedges to keep the dog away, press fire to lure it but use it sparingly. Hold fire to skip intermissions. [P] is pause. Hazard Run New to HSC I think, some crazy action here, again a bit tricky but fun, play on each of the four courses (not random run). Whomper Stomper Crazy ant stomping fun. Rope in a 2nd player for a bonus point. Fairly easy. Bug Off! Tempting as it is to allow autofire, we will play with NO AUTOFIRE!!! Insane of course so don't break your joysticks. New to HSC! Little uns can use autofire if they want to play control-1 will pause and resume. Pulse the fire button if fires a batch of shots increasing as the game goes on so autofire not needed! Equestrian A more than decent game, adjust speed using U/D/diagonals, slow before fence then speed over it press fire to jump and steer when jumping. Play Horse 1 Course 1 , Horse 2 Course 2 only. Dropped Annphibian BASIC BONUS GAME: CHICKEN (Stan Ockers) HAVE FUN! Deteacher
Hover Bovver: 36,487! A couple hints: 1. The dog won't walk across flower beds. 2. The neighbor avoids the dog. You can manipulate the dog easily with some practice. Keep the dog between you and the neighbor, but also keep the dog in a spot where he can't come after you. Find that happy medium and you'll be mowing grass like a pro! 3
Deteacher
Ok, tried out the other games. Here are my scores and a quick review: Bug Off: 3,390. This one is a hand cramper, but challenging! Hazard Run: 27,393! Ok, this one made me laugh, especially after the General Lee failed to make the river jump. LOL Amphibian: 120. Strange game, to say the least. Whomper Stomper: 10,800. This one is my sleeper pick. It's a lot more fun than I thought it would be.

(not random run?) someone report back please?! I used to play this all the time and honestly I don't remember playing anything other than "Chicken Run". With everything else to play that might be enough? From what I do remember you experience a brief burst of speed after landing. This game was definitely one of the reasons I voted for this package. It's not great but the TV Show was still fresh in my mind and I always enjoyed a quick run or two
Tron04
Hazard Run (Chicken Run): 47093 (score looks quite high and when I achieved this I had this "car jumps over the water" scene twice in a row with car driving full speed). Probably some glitch in the game engine...) (Note: My score without the glitch on a perfect run another time (no braking): 43269) Edited June 3, 2021 by Tron04
fakecortex
Tried out a few of these tonight... Whomper Stomper - 8,150 Great voices! Except on my ultimate cart, it scrambles “1” in “level 1” Ignore that second score, it was me, not a second player. Bug Off! - 9,250 ouch...out of curiosity, how do you turn on autofire? Still trying to figure out where to insert a coin... Amphibian! - 140 Cute. Dropping (rocks?) from different heights will take some getting used to. Tried out Equestrian, thought the dings were points...they were faults. I think I can get a better score to submit. Oh, and Chicken - 6,400 The game quit on me, so I couldn’t finish and get a pic, so I think I scored around there. It started off neat, like Freeway, and I liked that your chicken explodes with blood. Then it suffered from respawn deaths, too many in a row, and spontaneous deaths at the top where you look safe. Then the game went through some color glitches, that reminded me of how some 2600 games will cycle through different colors after you finish a game. Made it not so fun to play. Then crash. Oh well, fitting I suppose ??

Play Horse 1 Course 1, Horse 2 Course 2 and yes you guessed it Horse 3 Course 3. After reading the manual, it seems that Course 3 is randomized upon loading the game so it will remain the same once you have loaded the game, but next time you load it you will get a different Course 3. I suppose that isn't really a problem in the HSC as many of the other games we play have a fair amount of random into them, but it good to point out. By the way, Course 1 runs for 3:07.8, Course 2 runs for 2:44.8 plus all the faults you'll make along the way so if it feels like never ending story, it will end shortly after an Eurovision Song Contest entry has ended. carlsson
In the case of Bug Off, it seems every second game is a slow, low scoring one and every second game is a frantic, high scoring one. Or is this a pattern that only I discovered? You might want to play this a few games in a row and compare how it plays and in particular if you barely can break 10K points or easily break 40K points. 8BIT 1337
OMG my poor hand after Bug Off! I like this game, but when I play it on my own I'm going with autofire! ?. I enjoyed Hazard Run the most but that has largely to do with nostalgia. Bug Off! was my next fave. I can actually see myself trying Equestrian again too, although it's somewhat frustrating not fully understanding the collision detection and how to avoid faults. Still have to play Chicken, as I forgot to turn on the 'enable BASIC' option on my "HSC 2021" cart (looks like I need an .atr to do that) My Scores: Hover Bovver: 1650 Hazard Run: 37968 Amphibian: 150 Whomper Stomper: 9150 Equestrian 1-1: 4:56, 2:51.7. 18 Equestrian 2-2: 5:15, 2:39.4, 30 Equestrian 3-3: 7:14, 2:17.6, 44 Bug Off!: 35520 Just realized you can tell if I'm sitting on the ground or not in my pics based on how much of the actual TV you can see ?

At first I thought the difference between your and my times was due to NTSC/PAL but the discrepancies are a bit too much to be the only explanation: Course 1: NTSC 2:51.7 vs PAL 3:01.2 (PAL 5.5% slower) Course 2: NTSC 2:39.4 vs PAL 2:44.8 (PAL 3.4% slower) Course 3: NTSC 2:17.6 vs PAL 2:18.0 (PAL 0.3% slower) Perhaps counting fault points (in your case 18, 30, 44 - in my case 47 - 54 - 54) is the proper way to count this particular game in the HSC.

carlsson
Out of curiosity, I downloaded Hover Bovver 2: Grand Theft Flymo which runs on a Windows PC. Previously only the demo version was freely available, now Jeff has made the full game a download where you pay what you can afford ($0 or above). This version originally was made for Pocket PC which explains all the references to touch the screen. All the jolly music is missing except for Jeff humming the tune himself. New elements are a bone to throw the dog, sheep that will emerge to chew the grass, moles you can run over plus that the number of mowers has expanded from 3 to 5, of which the Queen Mother and Yak himself are the legitimate owners of the last two. It seems mowing up and down removes more grass than moving left and right, but it could be an effect of screen resolution. Since it isn't an A8 game and we already have enough games to play in this round, it probably isn't competitive around here but have a go if you like to see what Hover Bovver looked like 20 years later. I got to level 4 and scored 53996 pts on this one.
+therealbountybob
OK had some Atari time, there will be some cuts to this round, will update first post momentarilly! Proposed Scrap List: Chicken - not very exciting, found a basic game version that had less time but still not much happening, Annphibian - not very exciting unless anyone can find some merits? Hazard play all 4 runs Equestrian - play 1-1 and 2-2 only Bug Off! much better than I remembered - control-1 will pause and resume. Pulse the fire button if fires a batch of shots increasing as the game goes on so autofire not needed! Whomper Stomper good Hover Bovver good (not played) On 6/4/2021 at 5:35 AM, fakecortex said: Tried out a few of these tonight... Whomper Stomper - 8,150 Great voices! Deteacher
BTW, just a little "tip" for Hover Bovver: During the "intermission" screens when you're 'borrowing' a neighbor's mower, you can hold down the fire button to speed through it. 2
