Best place to buy 7800 games?

Other side of the pond pespective here (where the 7800 was pretty unheard of), I can honestly say I've never seen a 7800 title outside eBay. The good news is that other than a couple of titles they're pretty reasonably priced. I originally bought most things I wanted CIB/NOS and didn't pay a horrific amount for them. I sold those and am now re-buying a handful as bare carts with less of a regard to their condition and you can pick most things up surprisingly cheap. I just had one of those moments where I realised that the first thing I did with any game was break the seal, take it out of the box and chuck the box on a shelf never to be touched again.

As with anything else retro, patience is the key. Set up watch lists on eBay. I've even bought consoles with game bundles to get games when they've worked out better after I've sold the bits I didn't want. I'm doing something similar with my 2600 games right now. I managed to get a handful super cheap early on, but am now just watching eBay and will slowly chew through them.

I just took a road trip and visited a string of retail retro game shops in Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee, and saw lots of the common loose 7800 games for cheap and a decent sprinkling of both more scarce titles and CIB/NIB.

Shoot retro game stores near me are more expensive than ebay. You want ANY Atari cart? Minimum $10. loose or not. You want a console? Jr will cost you $150. 7800? $250.

One dude even lists his stuff from his retro game store on FB or offer up FOR FREAKING RETAIL.

It's ridiculous. I occasionally get lucky or miss out. Recently saw 20 games for 2600 and one or 2 for 7800, plus a jr, plus a wood grain for $45 on FB with free shipping. I really should have jumped on it but I've already spent too much money this month. I hope someone picked it up for themselves and not resale.

If you're more interested in playing than collecting, you may also want to consider purchasing one of the in-production multi-carts:

Concerto

DragonFly

With one of those, you can download Trebor's Pack, to play a huge list of the original retail 7800 games, hacks, homebrews/demos, and trial versions of for-sale homebrews.

Of course, you can always buy latest homebrew games on-cart, right here at the Atari Age store.

I mean, I think the first thing is to figure out which games you want. Some, you'll simply have to pay up for at this point. Finding a cheap Ninja Golf, Commando, Scrapyard Dog, etc? Really unlikely. A Tank Command or Water Ski? Double forget about it. Some of the stuff is premium.

OTOH, some of the best games should be (relatively) cheap loosies on ebay. I'd look for a lot with as many of the following as you could find:

Joust, Robotron, Food Fight, (you already have Xevious), One on One, Centipede, Choplifter, Asteroids, Galaga, Desert Falcon, and Ms. Pac-Man.

No bad games (IMO), and nothing that (IMO) should be crazy price wise. There are things I'd avoid in lots too as they add no value IMO, and those are even MORE subjective. But, for instance, why consider stuff like Touchdown Football or Jinks at all? JM2C, they bring the value of a lot DOWN!

Hmm...a copy of RipOff by Pac-Man Plus. Always liked the vector look of this homebrew.

Depending on where your located, there are local stores that usually carry the common carts, such as Game Over Video Games.  In northern NJ, there is Digital Press Videogames. They normally carry a nice amount of 2600/5200/7800 commons, as well as, a few AA homebrews. This is one of my favorite stores.

I gotta get to that Digital Press store at some point. At this point, it'd be nice just to be in a retro store, prices be damned.

Its a really cool store. Lots of carts/classic consoles for purchase. I picked up my first Harmony cart from the store. Over the years I've purchased a new in box Starplex controller and quite a few carts, including homebrews (Atari and Intellivision). I used to travel to NJ quite often for work and made it a point to run by the original location whenever I could. They had opened a 2nd store...hopefully COVID didn't due them in.

I really liked Game over video games! However, I am in Canada and they do not ship here.

Any Canadian recommendations?

Regardless, thank you for your comment!

Well if you're after some titles, I've got most of the third party NTSC 7800 games looking for new homes right now...

Hi Mayhem,

I must have missed your comment!

Would you happen to have Ikari Warriors or/and commando?

Honestly I eventually would like to get most of the 7800's line up.

Thank you and let me know,

-Ryley

Unfortunately not. I’m in the U.K., so most of my silver box Atari games were PAL (now sold along with my HES and Salu sets). But I also have an NTSC 7800 so I have all the US only silver box titles (such as Summer/Winter Games and Robotron), plus all the third party titles (such as Rampage, Double Dragon, Tank Command etc). These are all still available. Couple are still sealed too.
