Need proofreaders : Atari STE schematics conversion into Kicad

Hello,

For my own needs, I have converted the Atari STE schematics (6 sheets of A3/A2 size) into Kicad : 28 A4 sized pages + a table of content page, the same annotations between the original and the conversion.

I plan to do the final release by the end of August.

For this release candidate, I fixed some errors and adjusted some pins (mostly, bidirectionnal and output pins being promoted to 3-states, and some output promoted to open collectors), I also reworked the audio circuit for better understandability.

Having a reference PCB is out of scope, however I found enough data, namely a silkscreen and the soldermask of the top side of the motherboard, and the measurement of the main feature of the motherboard shape, so that I can initiate some groundwork.

Maybe (no promises) I could place the components to get a rendering.

Out of curiosity - Are the Atari STe two layer PCB motherboard ?

Would be cool conversion motherboard,  Atari St-->Atari STe of course I'm assuming all the other components needed are still available somewhere online?

To me it seems that it is 2 layers. Because until now I can follow all the traces, switching sides at the vias.

 

My design will use 2 inner ground plane, it saves me some routing issues. And I use regular through hole  PLCC sockets instead of soldered ICs or staggered pins PLCC sockets, so at some places I have to do a routing quite different from the original. This is just a recreation of the PCB "for educationnal purpose" : all will be wired as per the schematics, and if big luck is on our side, someone using this PCB could end up with a working computer.

 

The STE chipset have been substantially reworked, compared to the ST Chipset, so it would be difficult to have something that support both chipset at the same time.

This release includes :

 

  • A standalone Kicad project (all custom libraries included and ready to use)
  • A PDF of the schematics
  • A PDF of the silkscreen
  • A small gallery
     

The schematics seems complete and free of errors, thanks to making the pcb. I also mentionned some hardware fixes (with related urls), only related to the schematics and "easily" doable :

 

  • DMA pull-up on databus (done on the floppy disc controller U301)
  • WD1772 pull-ups (done on U305)
  • LMC audio mix fix (done near U508)
  • RGB Video ghosting fix (done at C411)

There is a remake project for the ST by Exxos, the current materialization is the "H5C1" https://www.exxoshost.co.uk/atari/store2/#0198 This one requires a "donor machine", for the casing, power supply and the chipset.
